How did you make the bridge from philosophy to chemistry???

The term *good* is surprisingly universal in all cultures. Being good means helping the people and society. Of course, the helping itself is individual to the culture/dogma - in the case of the Nazis, they also *helped* their cultural ethics by wiping away the Jews - sadly. So you decide by comparing the culture with what is ment to be good for the culture/society.

There is a majority of consensus about good throughout the world, but its the differences that need to be examined, they can cause a lot of problems.

Cultural relativism (every culture creates its own moral code and is judged by it) still falls into the subjective trap (like your example of the nazis) - an ongoing example being the isreali/palestinian conflict (Israel doesn't see a problem with killing hundreds of palestinian civilians). I put forward Kantian formal ethics because it was the only ethical theory I've found that doesn't allow genocide if followed.

A memorable example that I learned was of the Ik tribe (I think thats their name).

First you need to understand that the Hippo is revered as a sacred beast by this culture, and its a great privelidge to be blessed by the hippo god with fertility...

In this tribe the rule goes that when a child is born, the mother identifies the father by having the males in the village line up, and she gives the child to the father...

However, on some occasions the women are blessed by the hippo god, and have a child that resembles the hippo - mishapen, swollen face, stubby limbs, fused fingers, or any number of hippo like qualities...

On this great occasion there is feasting and celebration - someone was lucky enough to give birth to the hippo god's child! The village gathers around the nearest river/lake/watering hole, and the mother gives the child to its father - by throwing the baby in the water, and going back to the village to party.

The Ik tribe are perfectly justified to perform infanticide under their own understanding, whereas in most cultures it's wrong. what's wrong with the Ik tribe throwing hippo god babies into rivers? - among other things - there isn't a hippo god!! You can go wrong under Cultural Relativism by seeing the world in an incorrect way - a very easy thing to do.

what are 'systems' ...let's define what system means: sys·tem (sstm)
n.
1. A group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a complex whole.
2. A functionally related group of elements, especially:
a. The human body regarded as a functional physiological unit.
b. An organism as a whole, especially with regard to its vital processes or functions.
c. A group of physiologically or anatomically complementary organs or parts: the nervous system; the skeletal system.
d. A group of interacting mechanical or electrical components.
e. A network of structures and channels, as for communication, travel, or distribution.
f. A network of related computer software, hardware, and data transmission devices.
3. An organized set of interrelated ideas or principles.
4. A social, economic, or political organizational form.
5. A naturally occurring group of objects or phenomena: the solar system.
6. A set of objects or phenomena grouped together for classification or analysis.
7. A condition of harmonious, orderly interaction.
8. An organized and coordinated method; a procedure. See Synonyms at method.
9. The prevailing social order; the establishment. Used with the: You can't beat the system."

so there we are. The organism can be defined as a living system. You have organs, and glands, and flow. A very complex system, and if you care for it hopefully will be healthy, but if you intoxicate it too much your system will get dis-eased.
Of course organisms are not isolated entities but completely utterly interconnected with the land, the water systems, the soil, food, air, the whole universe.
OUR situation is that we are mostly living in a toxic system, and that is what I am calling the 'matrix'. So for example, in this toxic system you most likely will feel dis~stressed, de~pressed, etc etc. And the only recourse many people have in this system is to be treated like souless machines and given toxic substances that may not only make you feel worse, but cause extremely violent reactions.

Now if we look at older systems, like the Mayans. I have heard that they believed in blood sacrifice. And that many of the people had were sacrificed were willing, because it was believed that the gods wanted blood to keep balance for the universe and Mayan people.
Now some relativist may look at that and argue that that is fine, because that is how their system was = how they experienced reality, and it is no worse than 'our' system. But I dont think or feel like that. I see that system and ours as wrong, and toxic

It is wrong to exploit people no matter how much you claim a belief is real. You as an individual have to be freeminded anough to have the courage to challenge and question what you feel aint right and is exploitative and abusive. Like a girl having her sexual organs mutilated because of some tribla and/or religion belief that claims it is wanted by the gods or God.

Ahuaeynjxs a dit:
It's like you all are in such a hurry to determine what is true that you forget the essence of the experience, have you even watched the purpose of DNA videos ?

One step at a time...
When I recommended the purpose of DNA videos I had just watched the first part. I've gone through all 12 parts now, and I can still highly recommend it.

restin a dit:
With out systems for people to adhere to, we would need decent people, People that could abstain from impure thoughts and people that can be trusted by themselves with out a self orientated goal for greedy gain. An elimination of fear and a sense of well being for everything would also help.
you are sayin what the Bible does...

(which ain't bad at all)

Im waiting for the second comming :)

It is not humanly possible to abstain from impure thoughts with so many direct subliminable messages influencing us or becuase of chemicals such as fluoride in drinking water, Also the inputs we have as we are moulded into the people we are would influence what we think naturally.

I have never seen my mind or any one elses mind in a pure state cus its not possible while being human.

I don't really understand this question, especially the second part. Please explain.

Sorry about that. Let's get back on subject.

@restin: read it again. perhaps it will help.

No hippo god huh ?

Taweret (Taueret, Taurt, Toeris, Ipy, Ipet, Apet, Opet, Reret) - The Great Female - was the ancient Egyptian goddess of maternity and childbirth, protector of women and children. Like Bes, she was both a fierce demonic fighter as well as a popular deity who guarded the mother and her newborn child.

She was depicted as a combination of a crocodile, a pregnant hippopotamus standing on her hind legs with large breasts and a lion. Unlike the composite demoness Ammut, her head and body were that of the hippo, her paws were that of the lion, and her back was the back of a crocodile. All of these animals were man killers, and as such she was a demoness.

Another way that Taweret was thought to scare away evil that could hurt a mother and child was through the use of magic. She was associated with the magic 'wand' or 'knife' that the Egyptians used because she was a hippopotamus goddess:

Childbirth and early infancy were felt to be particularly threatening to both mother and baby. Magic played the primary role in countering these threats; various evil spirits needed to be warned off, and deities invoked to protect the vulnerable. These magic knives, also known as apotropaic (that is, acting to ward off evil) wands, were one of the devices used. They are usually made of hippopotamus ivory, thus enlisting the support of that fearsome beast against evil.

Or are you all still convinced all this was invented by the great imagination of the egyptians and they build the pyramids by hand ?

*refrains from laughing*

21st century schizoid man !!!

Thank you Fork, you are right. I guess you are right that the use of empirical dadaism imposes the naive subject with acute madness while improvised poetry reflects the unfortunately popular opinion about the unworthiness of arts. To come back to your question- Nomada never mentioned any use of extemporaneous language or poetry, it is nonetheless likely that such a matter of communication can -as it is a rare and strange way of communication- evolve a form of xenophobia, leading to similar reactions as Nomada mentioned. You write in your post that you have personal experience with such matters of communication and that you didn't experience such negative reactions by your peers. I, nonetheless, would like to add that your peers might not have the same level of -pardon me for this formulation- sanity. Yes, I would even state that some of your peers might share a similar level of madness and will therefore share some forms of understanding towards your use of communicative dadaistic eruptions. I am convinced that your post is touching very deep moral and ethical problems that cannot be answered with only one post. I am nevertheless convinced that your fellow peers will understand your dilemma and will share their knowledge with you. Good luck.

That was touching, restin, thanks.
