Too early to go hunting?

I've heard quite a few people say that liberty caps grow near animal droppings. Do they only grow in the presence of animal droppings or does that just help?

Thanks

Corrigan

Are the edges of golf cources well dunged ? Are the grassy parts of moors where ther is no peat well dunged ? Or The grassy parts of the sides of mountains ?

Corrigan, there is a large depression coming over the UK now. its my guess the temp will drop enough where you are to trigger the mushrooms. lots of rain too if your area has been dry

user_1919 a dit:
I want to go hunting for Psilocybe cyanescens. Are there any deadly look alikes? Apparently they grow in the Vancouver, BC area.

Psilocybe cyanescens, im pretty sure that there ARE deadly look alikes, but they are far less common. i belive these mushrooms fall into a catagory of mush commonly called "little brown mushrooms", where lots of similar species look alike, so idk, maybe search the web a little deeper and find some picture examples and spore prints of other species...

" im pretty sure that there ARE deadly look alikes"

Have you any more information ? Fotos ? Web links please ?

"links bout shroom info u said"

Where ? When ? I dont remember that . Tell me what you need and i`ll look for some links .

The temperature has dropped here as well . It feel like the time is ripe , but we could still have an indian sommer here .

they are up everywhere here now. i had ~160 last night. it was very nice, lol

Wow 160. lol i'd be pleased with 1 at the moment. went looking again on tuesday but still no luck. i think down here it might still have been a bit warm for them. Hopefully by the start of next week they'll be popping up here as well. Hope i'm looking in the right places. Anyone got any tips for where to look?
I'm in the weymouth/portland area if anyone knows it.

Thanks

Corrigan

P.S Cheers DruglessDouglas you've given me some good info

The edges of golf cources , park land , the sides of hills where no plough can plough , fields with sheep in them , moors where there is short grass but no peat .

Went looking again today. Checked in fields, the school sports field, near the quarry etc etc. lots of places where i'd expect to find some. nothing still. i did find a few types of mushrooms but definatly no liberty caps. is it possible that they're still not out in this part of the country or am i just doing something wrong?

Thanks

Corrigan

It might still be to warm that far down south . Take your time the season goes till the first frost and they definately grow somewhere near you .

What happened to that web link with maps on it that was posted a few weeks ago ? Maybe theres some info there .

ive been following the weather Corrigan, you will have them soon enough. if you have transport it may be worth looking west a bit

Well they are definately in season, a little early but they are out there. I went looking this morning (nice and peacefull stroll at 7:15am) and found a decent amount popping up. Not quite in full swing but with all the rain we have been getting I'm hoping for a bit of a bumper crop this year.

I found them down south in Surrey/East Sussex (Ashdown Forest area).

Of course being a class A drug these days I did not dare pick any ;-)

Thanks for all the reply's again guys i just guess i'm going to have to be a bit more patient :) . Yh it is all limestone down here so not sure how that affects the growing. and GOD do you have a link to the weblink with maps on you mentioned?

Thanks

Corrigan

Its from the thread Drugless did .

http://shroomr.com/

Just to give you an idea . I dont think it would be good to put things in there . And take care . Plus other peoples fields are provbably oozing with tourists if they are marked here . Dont rape fields please .

I had a look at the link. unfortunatly there isn't anywhere quite near enough for me to visit but like you said it's likley to be filled with tourists anyway. I may have had my first bit of luck though. I have found an area of open grass which i haven't seen any liberty caps in yet but i have seen quite a few other mushrooms. some in quite large patches. there are no animals grazing there. Am i still likely to find some?
Also any that i do find i will treat with great respect. Tapping them to release spores before picking and only picking what i need

Regards

Corrigan

other mushrooms in the field are a good sign. animals arent necessary either, its mainly that the fields animals are regularly kept in arent suitable for crops - too wet, steep, stony or whatever. what about the golf course a few miles south? cant remember the name, something- beginning- with- a- B i think. B**c**be
D**n

edit i meant a few miles north. not france

Here is a lookalike mushroom i found in that area that i told you about. at 1st when i saw it i thought it could be a liberty cap. but it doesn't look like it has the nipple on the top and it's not bruising blue where damaged. the stem for originally longer but snapped when i was carrying it. here are some pics and i'm doing a spore print now.
