The white film on the folio is from the temperature, nothing to worry about. The folio changes when u sterilize.

I'm using rye berries. Just got done sterilizing it. 16 psi for 60 solid min and and additional 5 min for saftey (i had to turn the heat down to check the mail)

Is it possible to leave them in the pressure cooker for a day? or would this just invite contams to join in the bath of water in the bottom?

*Edit*

On a side note, I just got perscribed more hydrocodone (I'm back on it temporarily again) and lyrica and all i can say is holy shit, they arent kidding that this stuff synergizes with vicodin very well! My current trial was 10/660 vicoden and a 75mg lyrica, it's relaxing to the extreeme.

"Is it possible to leave them in the pressure cooker for a day?"

Yes .

awesome, stupid appointment ran real late and I've run into them cooling enough in to early of the AM for me to get to them tonight.

Do any of you soak then simmer your berries like I did or do you just toss them into jars, add water and pressure cook?

If you do simmer, what do your berries feel like after they have drained for a while?

Ok, done. The berries came out wonderful this time. I did add to much water and overloaded the canner so it couldnt sterilize all the cans.

Hope my room was sterile enough during innoculation. Well we'll find out in a few days.

If they are to wet for to long they will form a lump in the jars after sterilisation . Its important to get the amount of grain to water right so that the grains stay corns and there are small spaces between them .

Yeah, I'm going to try a 'dry run' just berries + water, then pressure cook. The only thing I'm really worried about is the room I innoculated in.

I cleaned it very thouroughly last week and did a pretty in depth once over before I innoculated. Followed all the procedures I could, only thing I didnt do was heat the needle, I just used rubbing alcohol on it. Hope it works out I used all 10cc's of my syringe.

I'm not overly worried, but since it's my first time I'm not sure just how sterile everything has to be.

Each time you do it you will see if you need to do something about sterility . In some rooms you will be OK and in others you will have problems . Most of the contaminents come from your head / hair , your body / hands and your breath . A glove box is a good idea because its easyer to sterilise and keep sterile .

Let us know what happens .

I just didnt have the patients to make one at all. I know how to make one, just didnt. Well I'm balding and I wiped my head with alcohol before I started. I sprayed the room very very well before innoculating and I used plenty of alcohol during the innoculating.

Glove box = cupboard or big cardboard box .

Fish tank = big plastic box .

Here comes the obvious next question: When can I check on them for progress/contamination?

Also what is the minimum and optimum temp they like to grow in.

You will see through the glass . Leave them alone and watch . If anything grows that isnt pure white throw the jar away without opening it .

23°C but some people go up to 28°C .

Right on, got it at 75F, guess I'll check on em after I get off work tonight.

Fingers crossed, doing a casing your first attempts sure isn't the easiest thing to do. So thanks all who posted for all u're help. Especially you god, where would we be in life w/o god «

Edit*

Got home and checked them, no contams, but also no growth of anything. Kinda wondering what i need to do. I also noticed the lids were screwed on super tight and I'm using the loose lid method, so there probably isnt enough air exchange going on in there.

Yeap they need to breathe air alright, should resume as you have a porous interface !

So now that I've given them a better chance to breath, I'll give it some time to grow and check on em in 5 days or so.

When they are spawning the lids should be not screwed down tight they should just be sitting on the top and that alows enough gas exchange . If they are screwed down tight it will either make little diference or growth will stop . I`ve had jars that were half grown and sealed for more than a year and they grew when i opened them .

That's good news, they had 3 holes nailed in (small holes) for innoculation. I did do something I haven't read about so far; In 1 of the jars I sprayed 1 cc of 3 different strains of mushrooms. My first attempt and I already have that what if I do this mentality.

So having to little gas exchange right after innoculation won't have an effect on the growth. I guess I'm asking if the spores still have a chance to grow into myc. Or do I need to start over again?

Its best to have a gas exchange . If you have three holes in the lids of each bottle on the spawning run there is enough .

Have patience and wait and see .

Well I've never seen grain spawn fully colonized personally, so I don't know what exactly it will look like when it starts colonizing.

Do you think my 3 strain jar has a chance of fruiting all 3 strains or will the strongest strain dominate the jar and only provide aborts or small fruit bodies for the weaker strains?

I'm hoping if that does happen I can still get atleast 1 good fruit from the weaker strains for isolation and study. That would be well worth all this effort!

pure white to slightly beige "hairs" first at the inoc spot, then spreading :)
