Please, does anyone know the origin of the quote:

The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open.

nice quotes and poems from everyone

i don't know if this is my favorite quote right now but it was certainly in my head for a long time during a pivotal point in my life in my early 20's.. (its a popular quote attributed to bertand russell, but i'm not sure from where, could never find the source)

"The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so sure of themselves, and wiser men so full of doubts."..

The storm starts when the drops start dropping. When the drops stop dropping then the storm starts stopping.
– Dr. Seuss

If you never did you should. These things are fun and fun is good.

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life's realities.
– Dr. Seuss

Nice quotes Dreamsters . Welcome to the forum .

Maybe bread should be banned as it leads to other harder , more unhealthy things .

"The jar gives form to the void; music shapes the silence" George Braque (paraphrase)

"Tis the witching hour of night,
Or bed is the moon and bright,
And the stars they glisten, glisten,
Seeming with bright eyes to listen
For what listen they?"

John Keats (read it out loud I beg you! with a playful tone)

I couldn't decide on which quote from Henry David Thoreau I like the most. Decide for yourselves: http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Henry_David_Thoreau/1

This site has 64 quotes from Thoreau's publications and like 60 of them are just great. Even moreso when you consider he lived from 1817-1862. Wise man, ahead of his time!

More seriously, I love The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner

There is no difference in principle between sharpening perception with an external instrument, such as a microscope, and sharpening it with an internal instrument, such as one of these...drugs. If they are an affront to the dignity of the mind, the microscope is an affront to the dignity of the eye and the telephone to the dignity of the ear. Strictly speaking, these drugs do not impart wisdom at all, any more than the microscope alone gives knowledge. They provide the raw materials of wisdom, and are useful to the extent that the individual can integrate what they reveal into the whole pattern of his behavior and the whole system of his knowledge. Alan Watts

If you get into these spaces [non-ordinary states of consciousness] at all, you must forget about them when you come back. You must forget you're omnipotent and omniscient and take the game seriously so you'll engage in sex, have children, and participate in the whole human scenario. When you come back from a deep tank session -- or a coma or psychosis -- there's always this extraterrestrial feeling. You have to read the directions in the glove compartment so you can run the human vehicle once more. John C. Lilly

“Sometimes I wave to people I don't know. It's very dangerous to wave to someone you don't know, because what if they don't have a hand? They'll think you're cocky. 'Look what I got... This thing is useful. I'm gonna go pick somethin' up.'

“They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you're high, you can do everything you normally do, just as well. You just realize that it's not worth the fucking effort. There is a difference.

Mitch Hedberg's my hero man, too bad he's dead. I almost cried after it happened when I saw it on the news. Best one liners ever, and all the good comedians are dead now.
