I use Windows XP PRO SP2 for daily use . I`ve tried the available versions of SP3 but some programs dont work on it and it seems to have something in it that recognises some ripped XP versions and reactivates the patched activation files . It allso seems to stop you from making XP into a so called corperate version . The 6 corperate files that you used to be able to add dont work any more . But SP3 goes noticably faster than any other XP version . Vista is shit , it uses to much power , goes to slow and loads of programs dont run on it . The only reason that most of the few people who use vista use vista is because it is on most of the new computers that you can buy nowardays . If you want to do dirty deeds , especialy on other peoples Wlan networks , Linux is better as a lot of the programs you need dont run on Windows . But as Dr.Trick said there are a few good Linux boot CDs wich have the dirty deeds programs on them . I would rather use Linux but i cant find a version that apeals to my sense of what an operating system should look like , lots of the programs that i`m used to dont work on it and i`m used to XP wich is easyer to configurate without having to read an encyclopedia or get a degree in computer science .............= its to complicated for a stupid , lazy old bastard like me .

Who the fuck BUYS operating systems or programms ?????????????????????????????

A good place to look for info on comparisons between XP and vista plus Operatig System news is :- http://news.softpedia.com/

Vista is not bad, it's the people who install it on an outdated architecture that give it a bad name. For the record, Vista is not developed for older systems. One clue is the fact that Aero, that visual crap that everybody thinks is the next best things after drugs and sex, is effectively running your machine in 3D mode all the time. That means if your old computer has a less than flawless performance in complex 3D games, it will have similar performance with Vista.

I choose Vista for my new machine since I already had a legal copy of XP and decided to install my new pc dual boot so I would have XP to run old stuff and Vista to run, for example, Alias Maya 64 bits version.

High HeartCore ,

Good to hear from you again , i had heard that you had changed your job and was hoping that everything is going good for you and that you are allright . I wouldnt claim to know 1000th of what you do about computers . I have an old 32 bit Amd 2.200 GHZ CPU with 2024 G RAM with 400 Mhz FSB and a Gforce 6600 grafic card . I didnt buy it myself , i repaire other peoples boxes and they either give me their old parts or buy me newe bits that i needed to build the one i have now . Other parts come from when someone throws their old computers away either because they give them me or because i see a box standing next to a dustbin somewhere and bring it home in my rucksack on my bycycle .I dont play any games on it .......... exept the games i play on this forum...... ??? I did try several of the pre versions of Vista / Longhorn and a new up to date version of Vista and couldnt see any use for me , it just seemed full of irelevant effects . I just want a computer that does as much work as possible as fast as it can . I started off about three years ago with a 200 MHZ CPU with 128 Mbs of RAM that someone dumped on me to pay their debts and have worked my way up to where i am now . The only other facts that i built my opinion on about Vista not being as good as people had expected and it having problems with its marketing were read on the link i gave and in a few magazines . They basicaly advised people not to buy Vista and either reinstall XP or wait till Windows 7 comes out in a few years and replaces Vista . I did think it was a bit stupid of Windows to expect Vista to sell well becaise , like you said , people would have to buy new , more powerfull computers to run it and most people either cant aford that or see no reason to get rid of the tried and tested XP . As for legal , in germany they say Legal , Illegal , Scheissegal !!!! If i had to pay for software or internet conections i would not have a computer . After buying food i only have about 30 Euros a month left for clothes and everything else i need . I just cant acept that if i didnt borrow software and my internet conections that i would be virtualy socialy castrated and not be allowed to take any part in life in general . I refuse to lie down and lock myself in my four walls like some criminal social outcast because of having to live on a bread line pension .

I also have a realy old computer from about 1986/8 that had a 25 Mb CPU and has 3 or 4 Mbs of RAM but someone "tuned it up" by putting a 50 or 60 Mb CPU in it . The only thing that is missing is the original very big floppy drive , ( wich i am looking for if anyone has one ??? ) but the computer itself still works .

I hope i got all those words and initials right and that what i said all makes sense , as i said i have no real computer knowledge . If anyone can help me or teach me anything i`d be realy gratefull .

Love GOD

"Microsoft Admits Vista Slower than XP"

"One of the major aspects that caused Windows Vista to come under fire was performance. Despite the fact that Microsoft touted an evolution in terms of performance compared to Windows XP, Vista simply failed to deliver. And as far as Vista is concerned, user perception is virtually generalized, pointing to an inferior level of performance in contrast to what XP delivered on the same hardware infrastructure. And one scenario that contributed drastically to tilt the performance balance in XP's favor was the way Vista managed to deal with file copying. Vista RTM had serious issues when it came to providing estimates of the duration of the copying process, as well as performing the actual task at hand". "Prior to Windows Vista, it took the straightforward approach of opening both the source and destination files in cached mode and marching sequentially through the source file reading 64KB (60KB for network copies because of an SMB1.0 protocol limit on individual read sizes) at a time and writing out the data to the destination as it went," explained Mark Russinovich, Microsoft Technical Fellow. "Perhaps the biggest drawback of the algorithm, and the one that has caused many Vista users to complain, is that for copies involving a large group of files between 256KB and tens of MB in size, the perceived performance of the copy can be significantly worse than on Windows XP. In Vista, Explorer also waits 12 seconds before making an estimate of the copy’s duration and the estimation algorithm is sensitive to fluctuations in the copy speed, both of which exacerbate user frustration with slower copies," Russinovich added ".

"In a recent interview, as he attended the 2008 international Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, at the beginning of January, Microsoft Charmain Bill Gates suggested that Windows Vista could have been polished more before being unleashed on consumers. James Senior, Microsoft U.K. Partner Technical Specialist, revealed that the Redmond company is not looking to repeat Vista's mishaps in terms of the Back and Restore features with Windows 7. "I received a large number of comments with people talking about their backup error messages and whilst some people got their problems fixed others did not. For anyone who has been experiencing problems with Backup and Restore in Windows Vista I apologise it's not good enough".

Other problems with Vista are that sometimes it wont alow you to do things that you can do with XP and other times it asks you 5 times "Do you realy want to do this" - "are you sure" - "do you realy , realy want to do this" - "are you realy , realy , realy sure"..............

Plus its size .

Windows XP on my PC and laptop.
I really want an Apple, i like the awesome and very realistic graphics.

I run a highly customized version of Windows XP. I performed the magic using nLite and manual unattended install tweaking. Most apps I use, including a menu system, are portable and on my D-drive. Whenever I feel the need to reïnstall Windows I pop in my customized install cd and 20 minutes later I'm ready to continue work, since software and even file associations are all 'portablized'.

I was talking with someone about his Macintosh and he said: "Windows always gave me trouble, and it unavoidably gets só slow after using it some time. Imagine having a computer that, after 1,5 years of use, still boots up and shuts down as fast as the first time you used it." Referring to his mac.

I was like: uhm, yeh, that's not hard to imagine, since that's exactly what my system does :P

The thing is, the Macintosh does it right out of the store, while my installation required days of tweaking (which was fun to do and thought me an awful lot about Windows).

Yeh, I'm pretty proud of my super fast and steady Windows-install which I've named lol*fan OS (no, actually, there's another nick instead of lol*fan, but to avoid confusion let's just say, lol*fan OS ;) ). Boots up in 20 secs, shuts down in 5. Works fast, works the way I want. Ah, it's really a personal computer now!

BTW I've recently ordered an Asus EEE PC, a mini laptop to do some writing on. It comes pre-installed with a customized Linux-distribution. From what I read, it's pretty cool!

I like and use Nlite , after i make my bootable corporate XP version i use XPlite/litePC to get rid of even more balast and then make an acronis copy of the operating system plus the programs i use wich goes in in 5 minutes . The copy gets put in at least once a month just to make sure that i havent caught anything . All my personal things are on an external HDD and i NEVER have it turned on when i`m online so no one can see whats on it and no bad software can get at it . I also have a back up of my external HDD just in case it shits out on me .

Ah, backups, yes, very important! People keep their whole photo collection on the computer nowadays, baby's first steps and all that, yet they don't backup!

Apple's Time Machine external backup disk is a good move to make people more conscious on backups (and easily make a lot of extra money of course :P)

I did something similar with my recent vista computer. The store-bought install had broken DX10 drivers, broken graphics drivers, vista wouldn't even let me reinstall the official microsoft dx10 install files claiming they weren't secure.. terrible compatibility issues with 50% of my software so after much ado and weeks wasted that I could have spent doing more productive things I installed xp. farewell vista!

As for linux, it looks like fun but it won't be my main OS until i can play Crysis and Bioshock and run Pro Tools and miscellaneous firewire devices on it with minimal effort :D

I would love to have a mac someday.. so expensive tho..

I totally agree with you - I built a PC for my dad which he has been using for over 6 years now (with some little updates here and there) and which has never once showed a blue screen or any other bad behaviour.

Trouble with windows boxes usually comes from faulty hardware (bad memory, mainboards and so on) or unsufficient cooling. All of which you get in most of the bargain boxes that people like to buy.
I know from experience that you can make a mac spontaneously reboot and lose your work once a day when you update it's RAM with some cheap no-name RAM modules - the same RAM that you get with bargain PCs.

And by the way it's not true that Mac programs can never crash. In the last few years I have experienced more crashes of Final Cut Pro at work than I have experienced program crashes on my Windows box at home... (I'm not sure if this is also due to bad memory updates on the Macs - might as well be a flaw in the FCP code).

Still my conclusion: if you don't know and don't want to know about the inner workings of your computer and the os, but still want a good system - get a Mac, because it's made of matching quality parts, unlike the bargain crap you get in a discount store. I build my own windows system, so I can even do better than apple (because I can customize everything)
