Recently, this question was brought up in my philosophy class and we had a very difficult time defining exactly what reality is.

Ignoring the obvious that reality can be bent and that there is no definitive answer, what do you guys think?

My answer was that reality is one's subjective perception of everything. (a bit wanting, i know)

I'd say reality is the addition of every living being's subjective perception of everything.

That is, what most people call reality.

But my definition of "real reality" would be... "All that is"

Psychoid , + 1 .

Reality is God outing His fysical self
(not the god from the forum, I mean Thee above)

reality is a brain in a box with 5 wires attached to it.

when the thought machine stops all things cease to be.

sure, some could say "when you're dead the world keeps on turning"

...but that's only their subjective experience. reality has no objectivity.

...or so me thinks. :D

I think reality is a multi-dimensional image. and consciousness is a fractal that is encoded into the image.

Just calling reality subjective is cheap and dangerous.

This is a bit off-topic but may be helpful in your philosophy class.

OK, why is it cheap and dangerous?

A says torture is OK and is needed to fight terrorism.

B says torture is bad and is against ethics.

Now you can say that well, it's their reality, their truth so let's say, they are both right as reality/truth is subjective.

Then you say, why argue as everyone is right.

And that is dangerous. Because then you stop seeking truth.

Truth means: this is.

If you say there is no truth, you also say: this is.

And therefore you make it to truth, an unquestionable fact. And this is dangerous. That's what fundamentalists claim.

defining reality is metalinguistical, since language is to reality what a glass of water is to the ocean.

Nice one Restin . You must have learned that since your last pest in the Georgia thread.........

First rule of philosophy: For every philosopher, there is an equal and opposite one.

Second rule of philosophy: They're both wrong.

That's not true, it is a wrong generalisation of philosophy. Claiming that truth doesn't exist is a path of modern philosophy. Classic philosophers, such as Descartes believed in truth.

"First rule of philosophy: For every philosopher, there is an equal and opposite one. Second rule of philosophy: They're both wrong."

I want to see what Fork has to say about that .

Being in the now.
That's just one dimension :p

I agree :D
yeah.....

well i dont make sense to everybody but i hope you approve of this:
you see, the past and the future are the same things!
All that there excists of those is the now!

Have you experienced your past in the now?
Have you experienced the future in the now?

Where are you now? in the now!

The future is an idea, a concept of the now!
And so is the past!

So the NOW, is the ultimate reality!

....well thats what i've figured out!
Agree? Disagree? Why and why?
