It basicly does the same thing as a brainmachine, get your brainwaves into a specific frequency (Alpha, Beta etc.)
But yes I've tried it, somebody post it on the dutch drum 'n bass forum, I just coulldn't stand the sound.
The sounds that brainmachines make are more relaxing then this.
I dislike the sounds, I dislike the way it's presented and from what I've heard on the dnbforum, most people only get a headache.
There is other brianwave "music" that helps you relax, or prepare for sleep, or gets you to study at full capacity and such, but those cd's are really expensive.
Binaural beats/frequencies
Basicly it works like this:
If you take a 440 hz tone (C)
You make the right ear hear 438 hz and the left 442
You will percieve this as one 440 hz tone, but with a beat of 4 hz (so basicly it will keep fading in and out)
This is used to do the same as brainmachines...
The thing is when the difference is larger then 5 hz, the brain will percieve it again as 2 seperate tones, not as one.
Wiki:
Binaural literally means "having or relating to two ears."
Binaural beats or binaural tones are auditory processing artifacts, that is apparent sounds, the perception of which arises in the brain independent of physical stimuli. This effect was discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove.
In nature, two sounds that are similar but slightly shifted in frequency will beat to produce two new frequencies which are the average and the difference of the original two sounds. For example, a 400 Hz tone and a 410 Hz tone will form a ~405 Hz tone pulsating 10 times per second.
