I had a couple questions if you guys don't mind....

So peyote comes from the San Pedro cacti right? So are these illegal in the US? Can I buy a cacti plant already living?

Thanks alot!

peyote and san pedro are two different cacti with the same active substance, mescaline, which is illegal. However, both cacti occur in the US in the wild (mostly san pedro), as I recall. Check erowid.org for more info.

As far as I know one Indian Tribe in the US has the right to pick and use peyote in their rituals. Peyote grow in some places in the US but they are becoming rare because these cacti are very slow growing.

San Pedro on the other hand grow like weeds. They grow fast, they grow everywhere where it doesn't freeze at night - it's really hard not to succeed in growing San Pedro.
Last year in spring I had two on my window bench that where 5cm and 10cm small. At the end of summer they were both 30-35 cm big and three times as thick.
If you live in an area where it doesn't freeze in winter then you can just plant one or two in your backyard and in ten years your whole backyard will be filled with huge San Pedros

Awesome, thanks for the feedback!

So as long as the cacti aren't cultivated for drugs, they are legal?
I'm brand new to growing things and it sounds like I could swing a San Pedro, is there any where either of these can be bought already alive, and any suggestions for buying seeds?

For seeds look in the internet , you used to be able to buy them in the USA . The younger plants have a higher alkaloid content than the older ones . It doesnt grow wild in the USA , unless someone has planted it . They like heat and lots of water and then they grow fast . They also like lots of light better than full sun light . Tricheocerius Peruvianus contains more alkaloids than Tricheocerius Pachanoi = san pedro .

Ok so after doing a bit of searching online I found a couple of things on, of all places, eBay. Was wondering if you guys could put any input in on these. :)
San Pedro Cactus (Trichocereus pachanoi) - 6" Cutting

San Pedro 8 inch rooted cactus plant

And than this.. http://www.herbalfire.com/product_info. ... ucts_id=91
Which is a site that sells all kinds of stuff.

I would LOVE to grow numerous things but I need it to be VERY low maintenance, what would You choose? :P Thanks!

You should NEVER use rootone or other rooting hormones or fungicide on things that you intend to eat unless you want to grow flippers or tits .

"these plants live in areas which have very little annual rainfall."

This is bullshit , some of them might but others live in wet zones where they at least get dew every morning . They come originaly from Peru and live at a hight from 2000 to 3000 meters . They are best grown in hydroculture substrates and can be watered every day when its hot . Then they can also stand in water in the trays for a day or two . Growing in soil is not a good idea as it holds water to long and encourages rot .

"sunny location"

Is not good for growth , they should get as much light as posible but not direct sunlight for optimal alkaloid content . And the young ones have a higher alkaloid content than the old ones . Cuttings come from plants that are usualy at least a few = 3 or 4 years old . Or are even older , being cuttings from cuttings .

Ok thanks, based on that info I guess I'll just go ahead and buy some seeds and see what happens.

Thanks everyone.
