i thought the same thing until i decided to up and give it a try
i went out and filled up a bucket w as many different kinds of mushrooms as i could find and brought them to a nearby mycologist
i had a hunch that a few were edible, and i was right
once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy
remember that not all mushrooms are vague and deceitful
the edibles in the family Lactarius, for example, are easy to identify by the milk their gills exude, their orange - brown colour, and their some times fishy smell; best of all: no poisonous lookalikes!
Craterellus, too, are pretty much unmistakable even w out an experts help
it's good to have some one to help you out when you start, but it's smooth sailing as long as you don't take unnecesary risks
