Just to clarify a little bit:
The Ego as such is a mechanism of the brain. It is a sort of protection. It makes you go out end evolve in your current lifetime. It is the one that offers doubt and reassurance. The ego is not an enemy of oneself.
BUT: The ego of modern man is a deformity. It is a frankensteins monster created by media, culture, propaganda, society and religion. Killing the ego will take the possibility away to grow. It will take the knowledge of self awareness and consciousness. Killing the ego will make you irresponsible for yourself and others. You will become an Eloi (H. G. Wells) and thus a motoric slave in a world you will not give a diddly shit about.

It is, what is happening right now globally. Mostly by propagating individualism, false dreams, the right to an opinion and other bullshit.

Killing the ego is one of the worst things a psychonaut can do.

Getting on par with it, accepting it as a natural part of oneself. Getting to know its functions. Healing it. Learning to reprogram it. Only when you take responsibility for what you are as a whole, you will find all there is.
It was written above the oracle of delphi and it is still an essential step to overcome yourself as a human. Recognize yourself! And a big part of it is your ego.

Since I know, that I know nothing, there can not be an I that knows me, because, then I would know.

To meet the I, I would have to let go of me. Become my own ego. Since I did that a long time ago, it is me, who is I. And I did originally know nothing, which I know now. But ever since, I know.
