keeping in mind that pure water is (paradoxically) dehydrating
what?

huh that explains quite something.

Showering dries your skin, and water doesn't work as a personal lubricant at all. Weird that way.

although i wouldn't say that water is de-hydrating. it is only when one has too little or too much, which is actually a fairly large range, relatively speaking that issues arise.

for anyone curious, here are the main points to consider in hydration, aside from proper water intake:

sodium helps retain water in the cells (and therefore nutrients). flush out too much sodium and one will pee too often therefore flushing out the rest of ones nutrients.

potassium helps flush water out of the cells by taking the place of sodium, in what's called an ion exchange. ones positive, the other negative (can't remember which)

these are the easiest to control, as every food has potassium, and sodium is generally readily available.

before a workout it is important to have enough sodium so that as one takes potassium (veggies, fruit etc) closer to, as well as during a workout, they don't sweat or pee the rest of their nutrients out before they begin or are finished with their session.

there are several others to consider, but this becomes much more elaborate than can be paraphrased here.
a search on complete mineral electrolyte balance should get anyone whos curious a little more familiar, and more understanding of what it truely means to be hydrated.

This is actually how you get a hangover. You drink a lot of alcohol, and you piss so much and expel so much water with many ions in it that you deplete a healthy level of sodium and potassium in your body.

they are both positive - they regulate muscle contraction differently as well as play crucial roles in the brain.

I Was thinking today about how we don't actually need water for many things.

It plays 2 main roles in the body:
A source of protons (H+) that regulate cell signals.
A solvent for ionic and polar compounds.

Other than that, we don't really need it. It is just that these two properties are so important and specific to water, it is absolutely the most crucial medium for life. But really, it is more of a lubricant in which to keep life going, rather than any kind of building block.

Here are some healthy snacks:

Salmon with rice and a little soy sauce and a little olive oil (my favorite meal right now).
Salsa with whole wheat chips (no preservatives, artificial anything in either ingredient - chip or salsa!)
Vegetable / fruit juice combos (look for the lowest sugar or no sugar added type)
A peach. Seriously eat a fresh peach if you're high. Its so good.
Like I said before, eggs or tofu tacos.
Get some blueberries / strawberries and make some oatmeal with soymilk. MMM!
Potato chips with sunflower oil believe it or not aren't too bad for you - only if you exercise regularly though.
Smoothies

OTherwise I strongly suggest staying away from anything processed from a can or pre-pared for you. And don't eat too much wheat, we're slowly finding out that our bodies can't digest grains as efficiently as we would like (hence the rise of "Gluten free" items).

And of course, try to buy local and organic. Try not to buy from places that promote unfair practices like the H2A immigrant law-using farms... pretty much slavery.

It isn't a coincidence that the healthiest food for you is also the healthiest for the environment.

shit, you are right. i was trying to recall from my high-school classes what the mechanism for the sodium potassium pump was. are you familiar? i know that (at rest) sodium is mainly present inside of the cells, and potassium mainly present outside of the cells, but when a lot of energy was released (working out) that the sodium and potassium switched places. that is potassium taken into the cell, and sodium excreted. i know it has something to do with atp/adp, but i can't recall the specifics or the precise cause (i originally thought it was because one was positive and one was negative, but i was definitely wrong), maybe you or someone here knows?

@ "local and organic": finding out what is in season will definitely help with that. makes the food bill MUCH cheaper as well.

@"don't eat too much wheat": did you know that people who are gluten intolerant can often consume wheat with no problems if they sprout the grain? many valuable nutrients are produced as well that simply were not there before. it makes the grain into more of a vegetable. more precisely, if one lets it sprout all the way, then it is a vegetable.

I don't. It is very complicated though, many protein channels, splitting of water, etc. Wow here's an awesome site that talks about "pure water healthy?" and exactly our ion channels:

Interesting about the grain. Remember that one guy that had mercury poison on here? Talked about being in his garden all the time... Somewhere in Europe. He would eat sprouted grains with soy milk I think. Interesting guy, hope he regained some momentum, he started to sound a bit in trouble... physically, maybe mentally too.

i remember that guy
ahua..something something with an x in it
lol
he was pretty interesting, i never knew he had mercury poisoning though

yeah something like ... ahh I can't remember. But yeah he said he had mercury poisoning. Maybe it was not true, I can't remember how he said he got it, but i vaguely remember he thought he had it from eating fish. Now that I think of it, maybe he didn't have poisoning at all but tried to blame it on something :?

ahuaeynjxs! he's the one i learned about sprouting from. he (and we fisheaters all) have some mercury poisoning from fish, but he also had a (perhaps multiple?) badly done tooth filling (amalgam) and so had exceptionally higher levels of mercury from it. he recommended a few things for detoxing things like mercury too. chlorella was one. dietary clay was another, and also some kind of magnesium. even though he bumped shoulders (and minds) with many folks, i miss his presence on the board; i learned a lot from him.

ill have to check out that link when i have some more time, im genuinely curious now. i originally thought it was fairly simple (as far as bodily functions go :? )

who knows?
from what i recall he was fairly....mentally loose? doesnt truly describe what im trying to get at but im sure you catch my drift

after a quick name search (using ahua*)
Ahuaeynjxs was his name...no wonder no one could remember it, i dont think its pronounceable
wo according to the info he hasnt been here since the 2nd of march last year

we've gained and lost alot of really interesting people on here, a pleasure to see them come, a shame to see them go

that weird schwanke guy was interesting, though i didnt mind seeing him go quite as much because he kinda hijacked the whole forum for awhile there..

ahh allusion you beat me to it haha

Shwanke might still browse the board. I still message him on MSN once in a while.

Ahuae - yeah, the tooth fillings. I had forgotten about that detail. God damnit let me eat fish in peace :(
