Some dreams prepare you for events that you unconciously think may happen...
Others peice together neurons that are usually not connected, exciting the entire brain at times...
If you really want to know why you dream, just take ayahuasca, and ask the same question.
I have had many revelations of my own brain, and how it works... I can almost break it down and tell you why, and how I think the way I do...
I have yet to ask myself why I dream, although I can induce concious dreams...
I will let you know why we dream in 1 week :)

while were all waiting for the exciting conclusion to why we dream, i have a problem i'd like to share
i havent had a dream that i could remember in two months
i used to keep a log and wrote at least 3 pages every other night or so...
i think i might have stopped dreaming/remembering because school started, but two months?
its wierd...

It might depend on what you eat, what you do, how physically active you are!
stress.....etc.....alot!
I think it is due to the lack of sleep or you fucked your sleep pattern!

I have yet to try Ayahuasca, it is hard to get where i Live!
But i do want to try it, and to enter those realms with great interest and respect! Do you suggest a holy ceremony? Or personal but respected and responsible use?

for sure, going back to school changes your sleep cycle, not to mention the focus of your day-to-day life. off the top of my head..

second what psyolopher said.. are you getting proper sleep? beyond that waking up a bit early in the morning and falling asleep again can greatly increase your chances of remembering your dreams. works for me anyway...

im still getting a decent amount of sleep, although it is alot less than i used to get. my eating habits are same as ever, and i actually got over an extremly stressful time just about the time when school started...

one thing is for sure, you have NOT stopped dreaming. otherwise you'd be insane by now. dreaming is utterly important for your mental health.

some scientists made an experiment in which they woke up a cat every time it started to dream. the cat eventually became hyperactive, hypersexual and anything imaginable, I can't remember.

if you want to remember your dreams again, there are some tips: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Lucid_Drea ... eam_Recall

good news!
i had a relatively brief, vague dream last night
the first in more than 2 months :D
thanks all
i have another question though

recently i have looked into self hypnosis
ive hypnotized myself quite a few times with my eyes closed
but yesterday i tried it with my eyes open, and it worked. the peak was much shorter than with closed eyes but in my opinion better.
my question is, does anyone know any specifics about the relationship between hypnosis/meditation and dreaming? because i dont think it

was a coincidence that i remembered my first dream in 2 months after hypnotizing (sorry for the broken reply).

dreaming is the connection between your conscious and your unconscious self and therefore meditation/hypnosis can bring you to the """bridge""" between the two selfs in you.... don't think of it as split personality it is more something like two sides of a coin... it is not easy for the one side of the coin to see what the other side is doing and the other way round, however both sides belong together and their aim is to work together in perfect balance...
but obviously it doesn't always work out that smooth in reality, because for example someone might be focussing too much on his consciousness, forgetting what his unconscius desires/motivations are and because of that get into inner conflicts...

it depends though...for each one the barrier is different, but what i am sure of is that with introspect you can look into it and find out more about yourself and the parts you aren't aware of and by that sort of see the barrier between the unconscious and conscious parts of yourself... arriving at this point will make many things very clear for you if you are in a state of unawareness about your inner self... it is important though not to force anything... it is better to let the awareness of this come naturally, and the most important thing for this to happen is being in a state of inner calmness which can be achieved by meditation and also hypnosis can bring you to the hidden places in the back of your head.

peace.

oh...
thanks, that really clears things up a bit
