Hi everyone,

Today i bought a peyote cactus, the clerk said it was 2 to 4 years old. Now he also said that when its sturdy, its doing well. The top of the cactus is nice and "kinda" hard but the sides are less hard. They are also a bit greener then the top. So i was wondering is this normal or is this a plain bad cactus? Also i'm not to sure about that dent in the last 2 pictures.

ps: I don't have any experience what so ever with these kind of things so.

I added some pictures, which might simplify the verdict

I have seen that dent in a few cacti now. I think it is normal. Make sure you do not give it to much water, and rot root can happen. Let the soil dry out completely and then some before watering again. Also, that peyote looks a little older than 2-4 years old as it is in the flowering stage. Try to keep it in a single spot and not move it.

Hello ,

Welcome to the forum .

The pictures are a big help . The cacti looks OK to me . Keep it warm in the growing season and cooler with no water in the winter .

thank you both for your reply, but the soft(er) and greener spots on the side? Are they normal to? Did your cactuses have them?

One shouldnt squeeze Peyotes . If they are softer they need water and warmth .

Yes GOD's advice is good. But make sure you do not over do it. To high of a temperature can 'sun burn' your cactus, which could result in death. Also do not over water it, like I said before. Root rot is a big issue that can take the life of your cactus. If you start to see white spots, you may have rot root. But for now, read up on growing cacti, and you shall be fine. Good Luck with that beautiful peyote :D

PEACE & LOVE

The flower is relatively big compared to the size of the cactus. 8)

It looks healthy to me anyway.

oke thanks i will do everything in my power to ensure it grows up to be a big, strong and healthy cactus :D

btw (i really want to do this good), what would be the ideal place to put him? Right now i have i placed in the window-sill but there is also a green-house available to me. Which obvisouly sounds like a good idea to me but whith the winter coming and all :? doesnt he (name is oscar :) ) freeze to death?

oscar needs warmth. so winter in the green-house is aout of the question..

Your Peyo is little exhausted. This is his first flowering. Measuring size and flower, yes, his first flowering time. Cacti is 4 years old. Before his fourth year it is impossible to flower! Have U ever seen one year old seed grown Peyo? So I think that U have clone cacti or cutting in simplified words.
Give him enough water in morning. Cause he is stretching himself with flowering. Also U can "squeeze" it gently without fear. Lack of water is cause of "loose" downpart. Flower keeps upper part thick but not too long. Cacti is very thirsty! I can see that just looking your pictures! So water him 3-4 times per week. Or use toothpick as humidity tool. Pierce soil to the bottom and watch soil humidity level. If half of Tpick is dry or very little humid, sip more water on the cacti soil. Also use lids for pots. And overflow lid with water. Roots will search and grow longer-stronger if you also give water from bottom. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOUR CACTI!! CAUSE U HAVE CUTTING, AND CUTTING DOESN'T HAVE ROOTS AT ALL IN BEGGING. ALSO THIS CACTI DOESN'T HAVE ROOTS LIKE SEED ONE.
Hope that my advices help.
Also never water your cacti in day time! OK, but only when outside is 20°C!

hello, i've got a simular spot on my baby. Does this mean that i should give some more water? Thank you.

No . Its normal . At what temperature do you keep them ?

well she lives in my bedroom. Its around 20 degrees at the moment. And she gets 2 to 3 hours of direct sun a day

Warmer would be better .

yes, but thats going to be a little tricky. All i can think of is a small greenhouse, but i don't think that will do the trick without a little heating.

I do not know why people hide cacti away from sun rays?
Cacti such size like one on this pict above can sustain whole day sun light.
OK, Peyos are under bushes in nature but this is cause other way seed and youngsters wouldn't survive big hits of heat. Later as I sad Peyo can normally lay and absorb sun rays.

What is bothering U with your Peyo mrvn? On pict he looks healty.

The space between the pups looked wierd to me. The part whit the wrinkel, but if you say its healthy i've got nothing to worry about. :D

Goran.Hrsak a dit:
Cacti is very thirsty! I can see that just looking your pictures! So water him 3-4 times per week.
doesn't that cause the root to rot?

I thought i had to water it only from april till oktober and than only 3 times a year.

btw mrvn your cacti looks nice :)

Who told U that??? Do U have conditions in house like outside? Cacti and other "desert" plants feed themselves with dew. This is even highly counted for desert and temperature variations between day and night. DEW IS WATER FOR DESERT CACTI AND OTHER PLANTS.Of course rain also.

Water your cacti minimum one time per week. If U are afraid to "over water it" after such thirsty past life.
