Whos got what to say ? Whos got questions ?

It's most useful and interesting when you learn astrology yourself. To consult astrologers, because you can't interpret your own chart, is a waste of money, and it might lead you in a wrong direction. Everyone can learn the basics of astrology, it doesn't require any special abilities.

are there different schools in astrology? Are there any 'big' astrologers?

The main division is tropical versus sidereal astrology. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology the sidereal.

Western astrology has lots of house systems (Placidus, Koch etc.), Vedic astrology has two.

Within Vedic astrology there's the Parasara system versus the Jaimini system, although the two are considered complementary. The Vedic aspects are quite unlike the aspects of Western astrology (sextile, square, trine, opposition).

There are thousands of ways to calculate harmonic charts, progressions, dashas etc. There are also thousands of planetary yogas listed in classical texts.

Though the basics of Parasara Vedic astrology can be learned within a couple of months, astrology itself is very, very complex.

I am wikipedia-ing the house part but I don't really get it. Maybe it's the english. Are houses the 12 signs: Aries Taurus etc. while Placidus and Koch are different kinds of dividing, reading and organizing them?

" Are there any 'big' astrologers?"

no, they are all a medium

(sorry, bad joke. medium, gettit?)

This is clearly a threat for astrology and gaining infromation about it, not about critisizing it..

I don't mind others dedicating their lives to it, but it is not my road to travel.

One question that always resurfaces in thinking about this subject:
Where's the freedom in astrology?

restin, who's criticizing?

i have never doubted that planets, the moon and so on affect our lives, what i doubt is the degree to which these calculations claim to work, like when giving personal, precise details about someone's life... so, now that we are on topic, has anyone read about the maya kin? it's a set of 160 archetypes assigned through birthday, like zodiac signs but you know, maya style. they have cool names... i am yellow self-existing sun :)

so CM, how long does it take you to do a reading? i have thought about asking you via pm to do one for me but i don't know if you're busy? i can pay you in cookies. i asked my mom, i was born at 9:25 am.

The thread was meant for every thing about astrology , critic as well .

ok but maybe restin didn't get the joke?

It was a nice joke.

The signs are Aries etc. The houses are calculated from the ascendant. In Vedic astrology the sign that contains the ascendant becomes the first house, and from there the other houses are calculated. Koch, Placidus have different methods for calculating the house cusps.

As far as the time required to do a reading, it depends. Usually when I calculate the chart of a 'special' person, I may be raving about it within minutes. But for 'average' people it can be more difficult. Five years ago I was doing a formal study of Vedic astrology, and at the end there was a test. 12 charts were depicted without mention of place of birth or year, so no clues, and then there was a separate list of 12 descriptions: "this singer danced like a snake", "a great psychiatrist", "a writer of science fiction", "an author of occult literature", "a great scientist", "a politician who..." etc. And I got 10 out of 12 right, I just mixed up the authors of science fiction and the occult, though that science fiction writer was actually quite interested in the occult as well (it was H.P.Lovecraft!). I somehow correctly identified the charts of Jim Morrison, Carl Jung, Albert Einstein etc.

I've done similar "double blind, placebo controlled tests" with members of another forum, and picked someone's chart out of 5 sets of data. Of course, that doesn't mean (my) astrological predictions are always correct. But very often the interpretations are pointing in the right direction. Too often and in too many ways to be attributed to mere chance, self-fulfilling prophesies etc.

Forkbender, what do you mean with freedom? An astrologer basically studies what choices a person is going to make and what might be the consequences of those choices.

i was born at 9:25 am.
What day was it, and where did this glorious event take place? :D

the day was 27 of june and the where was here

And the year?

oh silly me

1986

????????, I was born the same day. :P

only at 1987 and 3:00 am.

:)

Nomada, Moon conjunct Mercury in Mercury's own sign Gemini in the second house of your chart, very good for writing, and perhaps singing too.

Philipos, Moon conjunct Jupiter, a generous heart and a spiritual mindset. But also Moon in Aquarius (an air sign) square Uranus, possibility of powerful mood swings. You must be a very lively person, original, independent and unpredictable. Especially your emotions, and all of this may have had to do with similar traits in your mother. Currently (now) Saturn is opposite the place where the Moon was at your time of birth. We all go through such "Saturn transits" from time to time. It may manifest in the form of gloomy thoughts or the recurring of certain obstacles. Saturn transits are rites of passage: you come out of them with new insights about life, discipline and responsibility.

Actually, I see that as recently as December 2008 Uranus was conjunct your Moon as well, and Saturn first opposed your Moon in October. So whatever the Saturn transit is signifying you're probably already aware of. Moon represents the mind, the emotions, the mother, women, one's home, homeland, etc.

At the moment though Jupiter is opposite your Venus, and transit Venus is trine your natal Venus, so you might be feeling quite happy actually. A week ago Mars was opposite your Venus as well. Are you in love?

About your chart in general, your 9th lord (which denotes higher education and spiritual knowledge) is well placed in the fifth house of your chart. Your moksha house (the 12th house) is also strong with the two benefics Venus and Mercury in it and the 12th lord Moon conjunct your Jupiter.

Oooh, I noticed that one just now: Sun opposite Neptune, good for blissful, transcendental experiences. Careful though with alcohol and opiates. There's a tendency towards escapism, or the father may have had such issues.

Your Mercury is trine your Saturn. You can study well, and want to communicate as clearly as possible. It gives a disciplined mind. Very good antidote for the Sun-Neptune aspect. I have a similar situation in my chart.

Heh, I just opened restin's chart to check something. And what a saintly chart he has! Exalted Jupiter in the first house, with the first house lord Moon in the fifth, forming an exact trine with Jupiter, and Sun in Pisces in the 9th house, with Venus trine Neptune...

oh now i see why you said it's good to know a bit of the basics at least, some of what you write seems like jargon to me, like this paragraph...

CM a dit:

anyway, is very interesting you mentioned my mom, i think i got a LOT more from her and her family than my father's, we joke about it and you can really notice it if you know me and her. what you write about saturn reminds me of the grudge, a song from tool.

i am not in love... except perhaps with myself and cannabis :)

when you say i'm disciplined and can study well does it mean i have what it takes to be an engineer?

oh and thanks for taking the time!
