Winter Cuts

Swim cut his San Pedro cactus a few weeks back while it was dormant. Swim cut them because they were getting out of control and decided to take the branches and propagate them. The cuttings were yellow on one side, which i believe is and it looks to be like sun damage, because on the reverse its green. You can see how different the flesh under the skin is at the cut. Swim wanted to know if this yellowing decreases the alkaloid/mescaline content? Also, in general, does the alkaloid content decrease during the dormant period? And will it build back up in the coming months or will it contain the same amount as when cut? Thanks for you feedback...

You said that your pedro had branches? Well the yellowing could be that the cacti is not recieving enough light, and on one side of the branch there was enough light where as the other side was recieving little to none.

It isn't burnt. Its just yellow flesh instead of rich green. Nothing is 'damaged' on the exterior, i just suspect it got too much exposure to the sun, or lack of. And yes the sun comes out where I am in the winter - its possible. I will try and upload some pictures for you to give you a better idea of what I'm dealing with, until then, any ideas on alkaloid content?

It sounds to me like to much sun , when it gets to little it usualy gets darker green .

It's sound like sun burn at first but calculate cutting work, which date is now-winter, and partnership between guys. Any thing could happen! This why I need Pict.

Goran has a lot of experience and knows what he is talking about so if you post a picture there is a good chance he can tell you what is wrong . As he says hes not a native English speaking person , and if you look at the time he posted you will see that it was very late at night/early in the morning so he was probably very stoned .

Whos is swim ??? or is it short for something ???

Haha sometimes it can get really annoying.. Im glad that it's not used very often on this forum compared to other (usually American based) forums where users can be very creative to prevent self-incrimination.

Suppose hypothetically that swim wants to buy a cactus wich might have psychoactive compounds in a parallel universe where this is not a crime.

First, my apologies, i think "SWIM" (someone who is not me) is stupid as well and only use it to cover my ass from forum moderators. And i use it on international sites like this one as well. Second, I didn't mean to offend by asking if we were on the same page.

Also I hope you are not implying that I am a "some white ignorant male," posting on a forum before I did any research of my own on the subject. I am not.

I was explaining the variations on swim to Goran and God, it was obvious to me you were using the 'someone who isn't me' but sometimes i come across other versions (like the 2 sentence parallel universe one) and get annoyed because it makes reading so hard and it's so unnecessary.

I know using 'swim'-like forms of speaking is sometimes requested by moderators (not here). And in forgetting that people are used to using swim in more controlled environments, maybe i am more of an ignorant white male than any other here. If you are white and male at all.

I hope the picture will make the problem more obvious so it can be solved, growing cacti can be really rewarding.

I also wondered about part of what he meant , but as i said i know he knows what hes talking about and thought either he was stoned or that he had used a translation program and one part had come out a bit strange . It could have been sun burn but you have to incorporate the act of cutting in the 'calculations' to get the answer.

Its winter now so sunburn doesnt sound very likely in older plants

You were using swim which was unclear what/who it was. but now is.

But could we try to write on this international forum posts with simple, clear, "basic English" words and phrases? So I think my cacti just got too much direct sun, i mean they were planted out back. And I have already convinced myself of alk. content in yellow-skinned SP; its considerably less than greener cacti. Thanks Goran, and God... you helped me figure this out.

But I do not understand something. How can such kind of sun light fry your cacti? I can leave my cacti on such sun radiation but that is not enough! Not to mention cold air. I am little confused?! Do you maybe live in Arizona, Texas, South California??? If you do, winter is no problem.
