You don't want to absorb the moisture, you just want the moisture to be freely dispersed. It would seem to me a dessicant wouldn't be a very good idea for anything but drying or storing the picked mushrooms.
 
I see what you mean now. You need to find a good compromise of "packing" down the substrate, yet not packing it so tightly you compress it took much.
I mix some perlite into my BRF+verm cakes, it let's you pat down the stuff a little bit without too much compression.

I had the same problem with having too much space around the edges where water would gather. Fortunately the cakes SLOWLY (really slowly) colonized.
But the next ones I did I just packed my jar with the substrate, very lightly, then immediately took out the moist cake and rolled it in more verm to give it a tigher fit without much pressure on the cakes, and to take care of the excess space between the glass and substrate.

FWIW I've grown mushrooms now on plain brown rice, BRF+Verm and BRF+Verm+Perlite just fine. Sometimes it takes real long to get results in colonization though.

Can't speak for silica gel, but dessicants in general are pretty darned effective, to the point it can dry up your cakes or such the moisture from the cakes to leave even more outside of them.

Beginning:First trip with shrooms happen after I accidentally find someone who grow them. Before 7 years in Croatia, even in Zagreb (capital with 1,2mil heads) only 2 guys growed shrooms and 3-5 guys before them in whole our state history. First time shrooms (some 100 Alica and 300-500 E before) and I fall in love to saprophytes. I bought one grow box, second, and third one invited piggsy cops instead of grow box. 10 months of jail replaced with 2 years of prole! :roll: They also plundered 6 old Peyote's. But what I want to say. After second box I succeeded from first attempt in mush growing. Everything going well. In process I use friend pressure cooker which I have to return and now I can't get it anymore. Then I borrowed another but after inoculation mold appeared. Then I got third one. Even better then first one.
END: But after cooking and inoculation (spores at start colonize fine) cake starts to smell. Sweet smell, like gas, but after some time odor starts to be unpleasant.
White cake but without pinning state, end- NO SHROOMS. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong. Have you (OR ANYONE WHO READ THIS) ever get such white cake with odor, but wrong one, not shroom-woody one?
Tragic, at beginning all worked fine and now no way. I wonder, what the hell is happening!?!? :roll:
