In a nutshell astrology is a divinatory system using mathematical formulas applied to astronomical data at the time of birth of a human being, or any point in time after that time of birth, and then interpreting the results of those formulas in an archetypal or symbolic manner. For example Mars represents conflict and strife, Venus love and art, Mercury communication etc.
Here are some of my personal ideas about astrology.
1) Individual human life truly starts at the moment of birth. The astrological birth chart is like a picture taken at birth. But the picture is not made of the newborn baby, but in a sense by the newborn: this is what the external world looks like to it. The inner world of the newborn consists of the reflected images, sounds and impressions from the external world. The outer world consists of everything going around the infant: mother, father, plants, clouds, the moon, the sun, the planets and the stars. When the child is born, it and the universe are two integral parts of one dynamic: the observer and the observed. At birth the being and the universe are one, and everything evolves from that moment on, in mathematically predictable ways.
2) The positions of the planets against the backdrop of the stars are the main elements of the birth chart. Astrologers do not understand how it is that these positions correlate to events and feelings of an individual human being. They only know, from direct experience, that they do. Some believe the planets actually influence us, but that is questionable. It seems more likely that they (the planets) rather reflect us. The two are related, but not in a causative way.
3) Since we're dealing with mathematical formulas and standard archetypal interpretations, everyone can become an astrologer. It doesn't require so-called "psychic skills" of any kind. Any scientist can be trained within one or two months to interpret birth charts and planetary transits, and obtain results that confirm the correlation between planetary positions and life (moods and events) beyond ordinary probability.
4) The entire show (the rise and and fall of empires, love affairs, wars, pollution, innovations) is mathematically related to the relative movement of the planets around our Sun. I'm mathematically embedded in the horoscope of my mother, as was her mother, in whose chart were embedded her experiences with me and my brothers, her husband etc. An individual's birth chart is not only correlated to his or her own life, but to those around him or her as well. To an infinitely skilled astrologer it would be clear that we are all reflected in eachother's horoscopes. All horoscopes are connected mathematically, meaning they connect individuals with others in the same time period, as well as into the past and into the future: all future babies could be calculated on the basis of all current horoscopes (in impossible task, but theoretically this should be possible, otherwise astrology would be meaningless). To give an example of two horoscopes being related: the time of birth of my grandmother is unknown, so I could not calculate her chart. But we do known the time of birth of my mother. A friend of mine applied a method from the Vedic system of astrology on my mother's birth chart. This was in 2005 or early 2006. He determined that my grandmother would be "protected" until August 1 2008. He didn't act like some soothsayer or psychic, he showed me how he had made the calculations and drawn the conclusion, and I understood (though I wasn't sure his method was reliable). Of course I never told my grandmother about this. But she asked for euthanasia three weeks ago and died August 1 2008. Could be one of those coincidences, could also be a confirmation of the predictive power of Vedic astrology as opposed to Western astrology.
5) What are we? The being we are between birth and death is the physical manifestation of an archetypal interplay of luminaries in the sky. It is the biological and cognitive manifestation of this entire universe, localized into a certain angle of perception. When the body dies, this particular angle into the universe dies too, making room for other viewpoints (new babies). There is no reason to believe any individual being reincarnates. The universe reincarnates though. It churns itself into the countless beings that inhabit our planets and planets like ours. It reincarnates through different species, races and families. It reincarnated as my grandfather first, as my father next, then as me, and has currently started a new cycle as my children. Their descendants will appear in due time, when the universe feels like looking into the world through their eyes. What is going to happen is mathematically related to what is going on now, i.e. absolutely predictable, but still it's going to appear as totally unpredictable and unique to the beings (Being?) undergoing the experience.
6) "Free will" belongs to the universe as a whole, not to the individual particles. The individual processes appear to have free will due to the configuration of their nervous systems and the nature of their belief systems, but in fact everyone is going with the flow. All future events and personalities were predetermined at the time of the Big Bang, or whatever started it all. You, me, everyone here and on the radio was predetermined from the very beginning. Enjoy the show.
