Sterilization Question

If I were to sterilize my jars via steam sterilization, can I put medical tape over the holes completely? Does the jar need to breath? I would take them off after injecting spores. I would like to do this so no extra water content enters the jar, because to tinfoil usually lets me down.

If you are using medical grade micro-pore tape such as 3M brand then leave it on. The tape allows air through, it is a breathable tape. Peel it back and inject your jars then replace the tape. It will allow airflow without letting in all the contams.
