Hello all,

Spring is well on it's way, and I think it may be time to start watering the cacti again, as well plant some more. Do you think it is to early to water or start need seedlings?

Also I think i'm going to transplant some of my cacti casue the soil is so dry and old. Should I transplant them before watering, or water them, and then transplant them a week or two later?

PEACE & LOVE

I already planted 30 peyote seeds 1,5 week ago, and about half of them have germinated already :) They are from 1 peyote with no cross pollination so thats pretty good so far.

I would repot first, then wait a week, and then water.

I'm still waiting with watering my San Pedros (or is it peyote you're talking about?). Last year I started watering them too early and got some rotting on one of them - I won't water this year until the sun is really burning!

Yeah it's Peyote. How long are you going to wait till?

Just another question. Today is an extremly sunny day. We just had a huge winter blast, and now it is blue skies. My peyotes are getting plently of sun. I had to put them in the shade because temperatures are exceeding 120 F. I was wondering if it would hurt if I gave them a light misting of water? I don't think it is to early for water now. It has been nearly 3 months since there last water, and that too was only a misting.

are the cacti wrinkled ?
i think you should wait until there are only blue skies, and not just for a week. i'd wait until the next month...they let you know that have awakened and need water. that's what all cacti do.

Yeah they are a little wrinkled..

i have some cacti, though i haven't got any peyote. i recently bought a gymnocalcium about the size of a peyote (not a watermellon peyote!! a normal peyote, as we see on all pictures), and i watered it from the bottom, and it hasn't rotten yet, so i doubt it will rot. only water when cacti need it, with particular emphasis and carefulness on the dormency period. during summer, if your cactus is awake by then, water at will, specially (as our friend goran said and taught me) at the evening or in the morning, when the sun is weaker. i prefer in the morning because the water has time to evaporate with the sun.

First look at weather report for next 10 days! If for next 10 days temp. will rise or stagnate near 8-16 degrees it's OK to place cacti on air. :D Finally! :D But watch for reports! Two days ago in Croatia temp has been near or over 20! But now it's -2 degrees! So watch yours cacti! That kind of heat shock and then cold shock lower immune system way low. Plus watering!
And bout winter watering or near spring watering: Use spray can. Five twists would be enough for 10 days.(But from this point forward).
At winter time 2-3 spray twist per 21 day period.
And now is time for replanting. Use half of old soil and mix it with new one.
Use regular cacti soil. But if you see that soil is maybe little dense, mix it with some sand. Do not replant cacti if soil is wet! Use toothpick and check for moisture. PEACE

Thanks Goran, I watered my peyotes today in the morning. I used a spray bottle, and the soil is nearly dry again because of the intense sun.

Chances that your peyote are lacking water and starts to rot of that is seriously rare. They more often rot due to an overdose. Don't forget that it can pick up micro amounts of water out of oxygen as well.

Make sure the end of the roots ain't getting any connection with moisture! I wouldn't water them myself unless if there's a long-lasting heatwave. Don't forget, it is a cacti :D And never water baby's.
