Hey

It started to apper some orange dots on my san pedro, does anyone know what is that?

Thanks

Goran aka Cactus Man will most likely be able to help you.

No offense on the 'Cactus Man' nickname. :)

i cant see them but it looks like spider mite infestation.

buy a food crop safe treatment and follow the instructions. repeat the treatment at least 3 times, 5 days between treatments. it takes 5 days for their eggs to hatch
or
use one of the natural predators such as Phytoseiulus persimilis

looks like Rust :s (is this possible? i know it is in creeks, but on cacti??)
what kind of water do you give and how much?

normal water, from the spigot and when the soil is dry.

thanks drugless, I'll try to find that. Garden house probably has that, I guess.

the little dots are where the mites have pierced the dermis (if thats the cause). they love dry conditions because they have to evaporate/concentrate sap as their food source.

you may see them or eggs with a hand lens, or with a very bad infestation you may see fine webbing between glaucids/spines

Luckily I don't have all over the catus, only on the bottom of it.

Maybe doing a cut would help, no?

Then I could heal the part of it that has the dots and put the healthy one on his own pot?

i dont think that would help
if it is spider mite treat every plant in the house. unfortunately they can be blown in the window (on silk thread parachutes) and walked about on your clothes
they wonk quickly kill your cacti but they can be a route in for fungal infections and they do slow growth just a little.

if you dont mind using chemicals go that route. check the label. you want something that will treat spider mite (they become immune quickly to pesticides) and is food safe and systemic

they can be killed by sealing the cacti and pot in a poly bag. they starve to death. or by regular misting with water. i dont recommend either for cacti

the predators are effective untill they have eaten all the mites then they tend to die off. they also dont like cold conditions

And those kind of predatores can be found on a regular garden store?
I think I would give it a try to those predators. I like the idea :)

Well, the cacti has those kind of dots for some time now, and it has been growing.

I changed all my cactis soil and cleaned the pots, since one or two (cant remember) of the cacti pots had some kid of small fly's family living in the soil (not this one).
Another weird thing is that my other two cactus, never managed to grow at all (the ones with the flys). The size I received them, it's practically the same size they are now. I made two cuttings on them. Since I had a problem with this one(photos) already on the beggining. And the cutting worked fine.

the small flys were most likely fungus gnats. if there are a lot they will eat the root hairs, stunting the plant. the same insecticides (systemic) for mites will kill the gnats and larvae. you will need different predators

if your local garden center doesnt sell predators get them on-line
predator for spider mite:
phytoseiulus persimilis
ambleyseius andersonii

predators for fungus gnats, also known as sciarid fly ( Sciaridae, Diadocidiidae, Ditomyiidae, Keroplatidae, Bolitophilidae and Mycetophilidae):
Hypoaspis miles (predatory mite)

if you cant get them wherever you are try help[@]defenders.co.uk , they may be able to send them to you

:)

Thank you very much for the information

I`m sure its not spider mites . All you have to do to see is to look at your cacti . If there are loads of webs between your cacti spines you have them . If not you havent .

If you have spider mites get used to them . You will never get rid of them . Nothing works . You might be able to keep them down but your going to spend a lot of time and money keeping them in check .

Separate it from any other cacti and leave it alone = starve it and see what happens . = either it gets better or it dies .

Its also in the wrong soil .

no webs between the spines. Just the dots.

What kind of soil should I use?

After i changed to mineral / hydrophonic substrate i never had any problems again as far as i can remember .

A lot of the problems cacti have is through over watering , and sitting in wet soil . Thats why you look at the roots . Thats where the mold or slime usualy starts .

The fotos look to me like cuttings that havent rooted properly . Dont give them any water untill april .

U have some kind of mold on your cacti. But pretty harmless. Your cacti is big enough to fight off the invaders.
Spiders/eggs theory is really interesting but haven't heard for any infestation more then 1/4 of my life(I'm 24).
Spiders love leafy plants, not cacti. Only couple endogenous-specie of slugs/snails can eat Echinopsis cacti. But U doesn't live in Peru and your cacti isn't from Peru, and after all U doesn't have slugs! LOL
What also this could be? Where U keep your cacti?
Maybe cold shock, heat shock, dry/moist air shock, low watering or mineral deficiency is problem with such symptoms.
Cacti, bigger cacti knows to act weird, every grower knows that cause we have experienced it.OK, maybe someone panic and call it disease which it isn't(dangerous disease). Some examples:
Small cracks on skin turns into greener skin dots or in other hand turns into "wood". Hard like wood and look like piece of wood shoot down into cacti. Like common wood, just look at your parquet and U will see thousands dots, stripes, discolorations and colorations, hard/soft degree variations, and other stuff.

Where U keep your cacti? Near which plants? Do U know that plants are like people? I heard that more then 100000 times from family, wise surrounding people and cacti growth mentor!, I am betting that U have also heard that from someone.
So have U heard for allergies? Yes, some plants can literally suffocate and diminish other plants like THAT! Similar sibilance bout grass under tree/forest or weed in vegetables.
Do not use chemicals and don't even try think to cut down this beautifully cacti!! Cutting is last resource! BUT REALLY!!

My special treatment tip for U is this. First cut of little piece of that "infestation, spiders, molds, autoimmune, cancer" symptoms(0,25X0.25mm). Place it under strong light and observe it like cyclop doctor!
Observe and write down (post here) what is happening. Is it soft, hard, moving?, dry, moist and so on and decide is that spider or something else but if U are in dilemma afterwards, leave it under glass/cup on white paper. If U can maybe spare one more cut-dot also use colored paper. Black is the best. Why? Color (RGB, white and black) on white/black background can easily show two different colors.
After that if U want to know everything what is happening, place those cuts under strong lamp or on radiator. Try to dry it in 24 hours. But don't rush the process. Leave it be, naturally.
Post me what U see. After such observation I will know whats really wrong, in Latin! But unexperienced grower will also find out what the hell is going on. Exchange of info here on this forum is supreme guidance!

HOME MADE MEDICINE:
Smoke one cig.
Took ash and mix it with water. One cig on 1-2 spoons.
This mass-herbal mixture cure must cover infected or/ cutting or/ damaged or/ rotten /soo on, area on cacti. Mix ash with water and then take sponge or something like that cause U need to "spray" whole sick area and 15% more around. Leave that for one day. Mixture will fall of by itself. Do that if U think that U need it.
3days and after cacti shape will become better. Hopefully problem will "fall off" also.
One mention: this mix isn't dangerous in any kind. U can even put it into eyes.LOL

Hope that am helping U?.

BUMP

not all species of spider mite produce webs.there are around 1600 species of spider mite, the red or two spotted being the most common to be encountered

Goran.Hrsak a dit:
So are they spiders mites? or spiders mites?
English! I live in Croatia! But nevertheless, creatures with 8!! legs.

your english is better than my croatian.

if you havnt met spider mites you are lucky. they arent too serious on cacti but they can be a vector for disease such as fungal infections. they can ruin a cannabis crop if they get out of hand

And they make the smoke taste extra shity .
