Perlite ?

Hi guys, just a quick question :

Can perlite be used instead of vermiculite for growing shrooms using the basic method (the one where you're supposed to make small cakes out of brown rice flour and vermiculite)?

No, you can't. Once the cakes birth you can put them in a tank with the perlite though.

Vermiculite is awfully hard to find around here

but check stores that sell building materials. they perhaps sell it in big bags. 150 L or so..

if you use builders grade vermiculite wash it well. then wash it a couple more times. its not standardised like horticultural grade

You can get Horticultral Verm at Gardening Stores if you have any around. You can also get a bag for a reasonable price via the internet.

That's what I found today.

How should I wash it ? Pour water over it, then let it dry ?

run lots of water over it. youll see how much dust comes out of it. its a messy job. itll be ok once the rubbish has stopped coming out. dry it well if you have to store it or it will get mouldy
