so i have been searching for mushrooms of all types because of an interest in them due to paul stamets. i have found a few of different varieties, but none that resemble psilocybes as much as the ones i found today.

upon researching on the internet and in "psilocybin mushrooms of the world" by stamets, i think i have found semilanceata. im encouraged to think so by the statement paul makes about psilocybes living in cities with humans. im still really amateur at this so i was hoping that someone could help me out.

i found them in a patch of grass on my campus in a pretty serendipitous way. i had an urge to go look in the particular area that i found them, while i thought to myself "wouldnt it be funny if i found some mushrooms." ive done this same thing once before, and it adds to my curiosity about mushrooms as conscious creatures, calling me over to have a look at me

there didnt seem to be a bluing reaction, although stamets mentions that not all semilanceatas blue.

anyways here are some pics of the caps that i tried to spore print to no avail. they were dried out when i found them as it is arizona and the sun is brutal, but they got somewhat rehydrated when i kept them under a moist cup to try and print.

hello Paint. i saw your photo just before it disapeared. i cant tell you about Arizona mushroom species but im sorry to say the one in your photo wasnt one.
maybe someone else on the forum can tell you your chances of finding them in Arizona

aah, the photos have magically reapeared. ill have another look

the top one im possitive isnt P.sem, the bottom one im not so sure about but i think not, sorry. maybe someone will correct me

thanks douglas.
i should mention again that they were dry when i found them, like chalk. so the stem is way skinnier than some that had the bottom of the stem still moist, and the texture got a little destroyed, and is hard to see in the picture, but has the sort of longitudinal lines down the cap for texture

if anyone knows of other psilocybes in arizona i would be fascinated

i couldnt get the shroomr.com thing to work, same bunk server thing.

but i was looking at another post where GOD pointed to the wikipedia article about p. semilanceata:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_semilanceata

the photo looks to me to be almost exactly what i found, but again i wouldnt know. maybe god could help?
GOD? are you out there?

i dont think anybody would be sure from the photos. try looking again at dawn or when theres been some rain, maybe you can find a live specimine. or you could attempt to rehydrate one by soaking it, it may regain some of its features

i tried rehydrating one by putting it in water, a fresher one that i picked yesterday. it may have been an ink cap that ive seen on these forums, but i dont know. its edges seemed to become frilly like the ink cap, but it could have just been the breaking up of shriveled dryness. i picked more but they are all pretty dry.

but it rained a little today so maybe there will be more mushrooms around soon.

im considering a little growing as ive seen a few methods on this site.

but thanks for your help

:)

Take some risk. For knowledge only 15% of shrooms are poisonous. And only 10%--- are deadly. Also U need minimally 50grams of death cap shroom as lethal dose. And this shrooms which U displayed doesn't have more then 2 grams. So be my guest. When U use E there is higher chance for lethal outcome then this! Decide. I would take them for sure. When find some like those with that distinctive shape they will for sure spend some time in my ingestions. Peace 8) :D

NEVER TAKE RISKS WITH MUSHROOMS

Goran.Hrsak what are you thinking?

Tell me bro, is ecstasy pill safer then random shroom pick? If U find shrooms with distinctive look like P.semilanceatea or P.cynescens, but if U look throughly why not use them?

Poisonous shrooms with shape like Liberty cap comes only from Inocybe species. Muscarine shrooms. Other doesn't contain enough poison in lethal way. Sorry, they doesn't contain poison, lethal poison. Maybe some puke and diarrhea one. But as I sad before, only 15% of all fungi are poisonous! And this 15% contains only 10% and even less lethal ones. Some years ago Fly argic shroom was "lethal" and even now people round the globe thinks that Red shroom with white pins is death carrying shroom.

Advice: do not use alcohol cause this could be also "one" shrooms with antabus effect. Drug for alcoholism and drinking prevention. In fact all psilo shrooms can be misinterpret with this one! Light and generally small shroom, pinpoint hat, thin and long bouquet, grows in parks, meadows, near organic waste or manure.

Try one or two shrooms. One should give U some slightly psydelic effect. If it doesn't, shroom isn't psydelic.
Maybe shroom fall in P.bohemica specie and in that case U will need bunch of them but this can be little risky cause if U maybe have picked Inocybe fastigiata(park-woods-gardens and very common, July to October, smell like sperm) or Inocybe fibrosa(high forest or pine forest, September-October, smell like sperm) light muscarine poisoning would occur.
This ones would give U light muscarinic poisoning which is psydelic in fact!

Or U have Inocybe geophylla(grows in parks and woods, most common under birch-trea in grass, October-September) or Inocybe patouillardi(park&woods, bulk growth, June-summer uncommon, dry smell like tobacco)
This ones in bigger amount, wet weight like 200grams can be seriously poisonous. But muscarinic poisoning can be easily antagonized with some atropine or similar drug. Akineton, Deadly nightshade, Datura.

OK, my will and determinations bout shroom use is maybe different from your druglessdouglas cause here in Croatia people eats almost every shroom picked in nature. Meaning that 20% of nature visitors knows almost every shroom and their properties. Ask them and U will hear how many are poisonous. 5or6!! OK some others are too but U wouldn't even look them no telling bout eating.

its not the advise to be giving on a forum. we have to give responsible advise here in my opinion. 25-30g death cap may be the fatal dose but much smaller quantities will still do liver and kidney damage.

it will take at least 10 P.semilanceata to produce a psychedelic effect in most cases. trying 1 or 2 mushrooms will tell you nothing usefull.

Goran.Hrsak your grandmother didnt teach you about mushrooms by getting you to randomly taste them. she shared wisdom and knowlege. now you should do the same. people need to be sure of what they are picking. if nothing else it will save them a lot of time and effort

OK, maybe I know much more bout natural fungi then rest of forum. :?:
So I am telling what I mean. U need to be stupid fool to take Death cap!
Death cap is fluorescent green-yellow on the hat top, ring on bouquet, and "broken egg" shell on the top soil level. D.cap is big shroom! Never found out of woods. Near OK, but outside woods? Never. Also no other shrooms with psilocybin in itself doesn't look like it.

I think that people doesn't know much bout natural fungi!?

I THINK THAT I HAVE SOLUTION HOW TO HELP PEOPLE WHO HUNT PSILO SHROOMS! I COULD WRITE SOME VERY EASILY DOABLE TESTS TO DISCOVER AND TEST WHICH POISON COULD FOUNDED SHROOM CONTAIN AND WHICH IS ALSO LIKE PSILO ONE?
:?:

i know what you are saying and i agree in principle but there are people from all over the world on this site. i know the scottish species well enough but know nothing of the species found in the states, for example. i do know they have species that dont occur in europe though. thats why i keep repeating : buy a good field guide

thanks for the knowledge goran, but i dont think ill be eating them without a bit more sureness. it would be my first time tripping so im not sure if i would know the difference between hallucinations from a good mushroom and those from a bad one so ill wait for now.

Tell me some info and I will help U now and for next times. OK?

1. Where do U live?(country and city, U doesn't have to declare it if don't want it)
2. Which day was that day when U have found them? Can U remember time of picking?
3. Was it raining day or has it rained that day?
4. How much rain fall 7 days before?
5. Can U remember temperature at day and at night 7 days before picking?
6. Does those shrooms grows in bigger columns or maybe couple of them from only one spot point?
7. How many shrooms have U found?
8. Can U describe them when they were still attached with mycelium?(everything what U can remember)
9. Those shrooms, where U have founded them? In grass on meadow, in forest(larger of course), in smaller forest(200 trees), grove(less then 50 trees), mixture between meadow and group of trees, in tree shade, or maybe near forest border and if this is true tell me which division that were (10m in forest area or 10m in meadow area from border line)
10. Can U remember fresh shroom smell? Maybe like "little radish", sperm, rotten eggs-sulfur, cheese or bad milk
11.How shrooms smell now? Do U smell something alike it (tobacco for instance)
12. Does shroom after bruise gave some color? Or some kind of reaction?
13. Have U saved spores from shrooms? Look on paper where U place them! Tell me which color U see and what color is surface where spores lie.
14. How big are they? Color, bouquet size and width of hat (now and before picking)? Anything bout shrooms from your detailed perspective cause pictures doesn't give much. Blurred.

1. the hot part of arizona usa
2. i found them a week ago thursday, so the 2nd of october, around 3:30 pm
3. no rain
4. no rain for a few weeks, but any grass patch as green as the one i found them in has a sprinkler system that probably goes off twice a day or more
5. Not specifically, but around 90F in the day and 60-70F at night
6. not sure if they came from the same spot, but they all had their own stem
7. i collected about 10 of them, there were a few left, and a few which had spoiled completely and turned black that i left
8. I didnt see the mycelium, is that important? should i dig up around the shroom next time?
9. They were in a patch of grass on the south side of a building on my campus. a large concrete walk way running east west with a few tall trees in the center that may provide some shade in the morning on the area where the mushrooms were growing. some other trees to the west that would block the late evening sun, but other than that they were in full sunlight. no trees or anything else growing in the specific area of grass enclosed by concrete.
10. They were pretty dried out when i found them. probably 90% dry, pretty easy to break, except for the very bottom of the stem, which was plump from the moisture in the grass. but i didnt notice any smell at the time.
11. maybe a faint musty smell, maybe a little like tobacco, but nothing very strong. i could be hallucinating it
12. not too much, but a few areas could POSSIBLY be considered bluish
13. no spores. i tried to spore print them when i got home under a glass with a moist paper towel jammed in, but they left nothing on white paper. although it did rehydrate them a bit.
14.The caps are now + or - 1 cm wide, and slightly less tall. probably 5-7 cm from the ground up.
they have brown gills, pretty closely spaced (i think you can see this detail in one of the pictures).
they have vertical lines in the flesh of the cap, texture not color. and the edge of the cap is uneven from where these lines run out.

anything else?

That would be a bit hot for p. semilanceata, wouldn't it?

hot for any mushroom i thought, but yet there they were. ive found a few other mushrooms around campus too, often in direct sunlight, but usually still fresh.

the grass here is different than anywhere ive lived, its like mini trees. they grow up and branch out, providing a canopy. so when it gets watered a few times a day the area under the grass canopy is probably a good 10 degrees cooler than just above it, making mushroom growth possible. one of the mushrooms i found lived completely under this canopy, and i barely realized it was there.

of course some of this is speculation, i havent measured the temperatures or anything, but pretty good speculation i bet.

Psilocybe semilanceata does NOT grow in AZ. It is a temperate mushroom.

The only mushrooms you'll be finding in AZ are Gymnopilus junonius, Gymnopilus sapineus and Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Here's a Gymnopilus sapineus I found here in Washington a few days ago.

Panaeolus subbalteatus would be the easiest for you to find and identify safely. There are toxic look-alikes for the genus Gymnopilus. Panaeolus species are easy to identify. Do some research on them and head to sodded lawns or horse stables to find them.
