I've heard two things regarding the safety of psychedelics.

1. No data on long term negative effects. If anything, there are positive effects in terms of anxiety.

On the other hand, I heard another thing the other night from Dr. Drew Pinksy from loveline. That is:

2. ALL psychadelics overexcite neurons in the brain, which leads to their death.

I'd never heard this second one before. Anybody have any info on this?

No, they don't kill neurons, atleast not in the way of "over excitation". They all have a neurotoxicity curve, which varies from each species. They don't, however, actually kill you by killing your brain, most deaths by any type of psychodelics (the only one I can think of is Datura) is not by neurotoxicity.

You can run into the second arguement with MDMA, though. But that isn't considered a psychodelic.

But for your first arguement, I can easily say psychodelics made my anxiety alot worse.

the overall safety stands proportionally to the overall health of an individual (psychic health, body health, soul health).
on a bigger scale it has to do with wisdom and rationality.... how prudent you are "handling" your life or others'...
of course it all depends too on the definitions you made behind the words.
your second point sounds like misinformation and is hence basically bullshit to make you dependant on your lacking understanding of the mechanics of your brain, thus making you potentially dependant on your own feeling of fear, which is a basis for all anxiety.
