Teacher stabbed himself to death while high on magic mushrooms
A teacher repeatedly stabbed himself in the neck with a broken bottle while high on magic mushrooms, an inquest heard.

Simon Packham, 27, had taken about 20 of the hallucinogenic mushrooms before disappearing on December 10 last year while living in Colombia.

He returned to the hostel where he was staying and when friends found him at around 9.30pm he became agitated, smashing a bottle and stabbing himself over and over, causing fatal injuries.

Packham, from Hackbridge, south west London, arrived in Bogota on August 10 last year to teach English as a foreign language.

He was a recreational drug user and toxicology reports also later found traces of cocaine and marijuana in his body.

Coroner's officer, Mrs Sharon Marshall, said: "Reports received from Colombian police say that on the 10th December 2007 between 5pm and 6pm Simon Packham was with his friend Katerina Lucia in her flat where she witnessed him consume 20 mushrooms known to have a hallucinogenic affect.

"Mrs Lucia witnessed Simon Packham eat these and remain for a couple of hours before becoming incoherent. He fell asleep for half an hour before he woke up and left."

She continued: "She found Simon Packham at about 9.30pm at his hostel where other residents had noticed a change in his behaviour.

"His friends tried to talk to him but Simon Packham walked to the other end of the building before his friends heard shattering of broken glass. She rushed over and saw Simon Packham brandishing a broken bottle in his hand.

"The friend shouted for him to put the bottle down but Simon Packham started jamming it in his neck."

Packham, who was described as a keen kickboxer and sportsman with many friends, had been due to fly home for Christmas just nine days after he died.

Mrs Marshall added: "Simon Packham has been described as a happy-go-lucky person who liked to travel. Whilst travelling he would teach English as a second language.

"He enjoyed kickboxing, running and sports. It is known he was a recreational user of cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy."

Recording a verdict of death by misadventure, Coroner Dr Paul Knapman, said: "It is perfectly clear he has died from haemorrhagic shock due to inflicted injuries to his neck. It is also perfectly clear that when he did so he was not himself he was under the influence of drugs so it can't be said this is a true suicide.

"He was clearly under the influence of these mushrooms and the problem was made worse by marijuana and cocaine. For that reason I am going to say this is a case of misadventure."

After the hearing at Westminster Coroner's Court, Simon's father, said he lived for travelling and teaching and was close to his family which includes one brother and three sisters.

Robert Packham, 57, a retired electrician, said the tragedy should act as a warning to other young travellers.

Sad news... But what a strange combination: cocaine and shrooms? Maybe this is what happens when coke psychosis meets psychedelic? I know someone who used a lot of cocaine and after that he ate a bunch of shrooms (he really asked for it). He entered a psychotic state of mind and has never gotton out of it. Three years later he is still a messed up scizofrenic.

Something tells me you shouldn't combine mind narrowing and mind expanding substances...

The article is not very clear on if he was under influence of cocaine also...

It was in his blood, but that could be from a long time ago...

Why do people always claim that these so-called 'drugvictims' were the best people who were totally cool with themselves and others and would never commit suicide? Always blaming the drugs for the stupidity of a loved one. "he was not himself he was under the influence of drugs so it can't be said this is a true suicide."

R.I.P. Simon Packham

wow that really is a sad story thats even worse than jumping out of a window (this is something i can understand.......yep its sick i know) but stabbing youre selve to death....man there must be something else going one with that guy. I really feel sorry for him.

Dunno, but someone on DoseNation commented: "I imagine this guy was on more cocaine than the article says - he was staying in Bogota which should say something right there."

^No shit.

In all my trips, which includes some difficult experiences, I have never ever even considered something like that an option. And although I'm getting used to reading "Someone ate shrooms and naturally killed himself shortly afterwards"-stories I still can't even come close to comprehending how anyone could do such a thing.

I'm guessing this guy didn't have a proper tripsitter, and didn't at all know what was coming, as he was a first-timer.

It's so sad that no one could just help him, I mean five minutes of reasoning with him, telling him it will be over in 4 to 5 hours anyway, might have saved his life...

R.I.P. He didn't deserve this, neither did the mushrooms.

I never read that story, but it's typical for these kind of cases. People who take mushrooms thinking it might be fun, probably drinking loads of alcohol before, and just hopping around town eating them in a random place etc.

Well,to be honest,I had once a suicidal thought on shrooms, but just for a moment. I think it all depends on the user. And maybe if you combine shrooms and coke this is what may happen. I feel pity for the guy.

he was under the influence of drugs so it can't be said this is a true suicide.
maybe i'm way out of line here, but this seems to me the same as claiming that a student that shoots up their school is not a true murderer because it was caused by bullying / violent video games / et cetera = no one would ever say some thing as ignorant

Twenty mushrooms + cocaine?

I feel sorry for the guy but, really, did he have any idea what he was doing?

As for blaming the drugs, that's the reason this story was probably published, as opposed to thousands of other tragedies..

Great point!

We dont know if he was on cocaine . We dont know his true mental health . In my experience most people who travel to foregn countrys have a sort of culture shock and outsider syndrome . All we realy know is that he abused mushrooms and himself . Mushrooms dont cause people to harm themselves they only release and maybe amplify whats already there . Lately we have talked about 4 cases here , thats 4 from how many mushroom experiments that have taken place all over the world in the same time ? How many people have drunk alcohol and had died in the same time ?

I like cocaine . And drugs arent harmfull , its what people do with them that can be harmfull .

Exactly, probably a hell of a lot more people die from alcohol, per capita too, all things considered. If some kid who knows nothing opens up a 26er of JD for the first time and chugs it and ends up in the hospital, you never hear the media blame it on alcohol.

Id blame the coke, Its a bad drug and obviously this mans stupidity...

Makes myself paranoid and aggressive...

Shrooms and coke = Time bomb....

The bloke and his friends give drugs a bad name, Hopefully someone will learn from this.

I wonder what went through his mind... What made it ok for this guy to stab himself to fucking death!?

Now i never did coke, but i know someone who does.
And this guy looks at me troubled for doing shrooms :P
He said he`s to afraid to try it...

i dont see how people here are "pro-drugs" but at the same time bashing cocaine.

cocaine is a fucking awesome substance, until you start to abuse it. but the same thing can be said for mushrooms. i know a guy that used to eat mushrooms as often as he could, as many as he could, for pretty much as long as he could (about 3 months). he was WAY more burned out than any coke-head ive ever seen.

im just saying.. its pretty ridiculous to be for some drugs and against others...

i mixed coke with an LSD peak and it was absolute bliss.

the problem isnt coke, the problem is that crazy people shouldnt take drugs.

Another one bites the dust.

A high moron is a super moron.
