KI --> I2

Iodine is getting harder to obtain. Anyone know the easiest synth for KI to Iodine? I have tried H202 and HCL that didn't work. Now I have been dropping sulfuric acid slowly into a KI solution but I feel there must be a easier more effective way to do this.

Bromine? Chlorine gas? any ideas?

Wanting I2 crystals for demonstration purposes, I came to the same conclusion. Fucking meth, ruined the fun for everyone.

What did you do exactly, maybe we can troubleshoot.

So:

Concentrations, ratios, order of adding, what colour is the liquid ? Did you solve the KI in advance ? What did you observe while adding the different chemicals etc. How are you planning to filter the goo: with or with vacuum filtering ?

It is a simple reaction really, one that should work with even 3% commercial concentration H2O2 and 10 % HCl. [1].

Be aware that you need an abundance of oxidizer (H202) to insure the reaction is pushed to completion, not so much because there is an equilibrium, but because any available I- ions render I2 water soluble.

[1] Use common chemical safety measures. Use goggles, gloves and your brain and do not inhale the vapours. But apart from that nothing really special that is (or should be!) not obvious to anyone that is attempting a chemical experiment. This includes making notes and visiting the library to read some books relevant to the subject. A classical reference would be Vogel's practical organic chemistry, but there are many good other sources.

the same process you are using, but with adverts!
you can use sodium hydrogen sulphate in stead of HCl(same process)
