a couple of years ago i discovered this. if you heat ammonium nitrate ( carefully!) to 220-240degC it dissociates to nitrous and water vapour. get your ammonium nitrate from medical(chemical) cold packs. its a larf. avoid open flames and anti terrorist squads though. let me know how you get on... :lol:

( seriously, I thought this was a cool idea, too....but people need to be able to grasp some basics....and most don't have any grasp of the most basic of scientific principles....which means they have no business playing with heat, chemicals, and flasks)

No security through obscurity.

Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) is fuel deficient. Anyone with a rudimentary level chemistry knowledge can explain that to you. No magic involved. Ask your nephew of age 16 to balance the decomposition reaction.

So, the excess oxidizer can be matched to a fuel. Usually somethink like diesel fuel is used. Other additives, like Al, are used to make the mixture more sensitive. But really, the mixture is a crappy explosive. It is only used in quarries because it is dirt-cheap. It is not a component in plastic-explosives. Other, far 'better', explosives are used for that.

Explosives are dull in my opinion. They go boom.. that's it. A blunt tool. They lack depth. I made a concious choice not to get into them because I just know they are extremely addictive nevertheless. Very much like the stimulants nicotine, caffeine, (meth)amphetamine or cocaine.

Pyrotechnics on the other hand are a combination of craftmanship and science, dating hundreds of years back. It's main purpose is to bring joy and awe to people, much like the psychedelics we all love so much. Pyrotechnics were my love and obsession when I was in highschool.

To get back ontopic:

Making your own nitrous oxide would be nice, but only for the experimentation's sake. Lungs are delicate organs.
Things to think of: efficient gas scrubbing, even heating and temperature control of the salt, good ventilation.

^usually ammonium nitrate does need a fuel, but when *hot* becomes explosive on its own (that's what they don't tell you in high school).. also can be detonated (BASF explosion - early 1900's caused by dynamiting ammonium nitrate slag heaps).

and there are plastic explosives that contain it - TNT / ammonium nitrate mixes.

To get back off topic.....

Amonium Nitrate and Sodium Chlorate = low explosive and dangerous . Sodium Chlorate and sugar is not so explosive and also not so dangerous to handle . They are used to move dirt and stone and they stunn like a short jab . High explosives need a detonator , like from a car airbag , and are more like a right hook . = the one has a high velocity explosion and the other has a high detonation preassure . The lower the boiling / flame point of solvents the bigger bang they make when mixed with Amonium Nitrate . The one burns and the other suplys Oxygen . Other things you can mix with Amonium Nitrate are fuel oil , diesel , petrol , charcoal , Dietheylene glycol = anti freeze , aluminium powder , magnesium powder , methanol , ethanol , mononitronapthalene = mothballs , hexamine , nitromethane , piss = urea , .......... hydrazine nitrate liquid....... = ooops .... B-A-N-G .....bye bye....... ( = its dangerous and stronger than plastic TNT amonium nitrate mixes !!! )

Aditives to improve the explosive qualitys are "tide" / "mr.bubble" soap powder , saw dust , steric acid , cobalt / ferric / iron / chromium / lead / calcium nitrates , soy bean oil , dry ground coffee , corn starch......

Amonium nitrate explosives start off with prilled amonium nitrate + charcoal wich has a detonation velocity of 2400 - 3500 m/s and a detonation preasure of 390,000 - 800,000 P.S.I. and go up to amonium nitrate + hydrazine nitrate liquid wich has a detonation velocity of 8500 m/s and a detonation pressure of 5,000,000 P.S.I.

Tatp = triacetontriperoxide ( if i remember rightly ) is very easy to make and cheep , its the one that is in fashion with net kiddys at the moment . The one people blow telephone cells and fag machines up with . The ingredients can be bought from hair dressers and building markets .

If you insist in fucking your life up remember the chemicals are all WATCHED and its EXTREMELY DANGEROUS so dont do it . Think first about your safety and the war on tourists / the patriot act and 30 years in Guantanamo being fucked in the arse by the CIA . If you are stupid enough to mess around with any sort of explosives can you please mount a camera with a teleobjective about 500 yards away and film your death so we can all have a good laugh please .

I once had an "acident" with 8 kilos of sodium chlorate and sugar and i was standing about 20 cms away at the time it went UP........ + one with about 200 grams and a car that died spectacularly .......... + one with 100 gramms and someones front door = door gone , front garden burned away , lady had nervous breakdown , dog died , man went N-U-T-S ............... but they didnt fuck with me again !!!!

The 8 kilos was on the floor in a pile and it was very dark........... and i was looking for it with a...........lit match !!!!!

Me 3 !!!! I`m still amazed at how dumb i......... was ??? As the match got about 20 cms away from the pile it lit it...... = a pillar of white light , like a magnesium fire , about 25 cms wide , shot up , hit the roof and spread white poisonous smoke around so i had to crawl out , the people outside started paniking , shouting and freaking out . I jumped in the wrong direction = away from my escape root and spent a few minutes being F-R-Y-E-D . The roof got so hot it started to crack loudly . The flame burnt a hole through my anorak , my pullover , my shirt , my tshirt and my vest and gave my back a lovely sun tan from about 1.5 meters away .

Its called being a VERY LUCKY dumb fucker and learning by doing / burning / stupidity.......
