at this time of the year all birds want is fat. animal fat is cheap, and even if you are vegetarian there is no substitute as far as the birds are concerned. hydrogenated/hard vegetable fats are almost toxic to birds, so dont be tempted.
if your karma wont allow you to buy animal fat, peanuts or similarly fatty nuts will suffice, but some birds are ill-equipped to deal with nuts, whereas practically anything can benefit from lard or dripping.
