Don't Mess with Sleep - In these hectic times, we should all avoid voluntary sleep deprivation at all costs

Lack of sleep can be very harmful for our bodies, both long-term and in the short run

Whenever we happen to have one of those hectic, incredibly busy days when time seems to be slipping by and we feel like we're not getting anything done properly, sleep is one of the first things that we readily sacrifice. An hour or two, we say to ourselves, will not make a great deal of difference in our daily schedule, as long as at the end of the day (or rather, in the middle of the night) we can finally put aside our computers and give a well-earned, sleepy sigh of relief. However, doctors have been warning us for a long time that self-induced sleep deprivation is very bad news for us, as it reduces our productivity and exposes us to wide varieties of risks.

"The group of people getting optimal sleep is getting smaller and smaller. When a person's sleep drops to six hours or less, that's when a lot of things become very problematic", warns an expert from the Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders and Research Center in Detroit. Of course, not all of us need the same amount of sleep however, six hours per night is definitely not enough for anyone. The immediate effects of lack of sleep affect our day-to-day activities and our overall productivity, but don't let yourselves be fooled into a false sense of security lack of sleep also has long-term effects that build up gradually and sleeping late on a Sunday will definitely not act like a compensating mechanism.

The short-term effects of sleep deprivation range from making bad decisions to much more serious things, such as lapses of attention while driving, which can cause veritable tragedies. The long-term effects of our "stay awake longer" crusade are equally severe: weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, depression and substance abuse can all occur as we stubbornly refuse to allow our brains to rest completely.

When we sleep, all sorts of beneficial changes take place in our bodies and when that doesn't happen, things stop functioning properly. One example of this would be the fact that due to insufficient sleep, our bodies secrete smaller amounts of appetite-suppressing hormones and higher doses of appetite stimulating hormones, which make us crave more food than our bodies really need and thus pile on the pounds. With all the other sources of stress in our environment, lack of sleep is definitely not something we should inflict upon ourselves.

I havent slept a night through since 1978/9 . I have to go for a piss between 2 and 8 times a night .
 
I've been tired non-stop (cause unknow 'till a few days) for 4 years, I know what you mean...
 
im a true insomniac too. im lucky if i sleep 4 hours a night. i used to get prescription sleeping tablets but gave up because i get tolerance in a week. ive now accepted i dont need to sleep 8 hours and feel fine and rested after 6. i believe we all need a different amount of sleep to feel refreshed.
 
if i see i can't sleep i make myself a camomile or a pure joint and i start concentrating on every single muscle in my body and i "force" relax it
after a while i find i can barely move and thus i trick my mind that it's better to sleep. i used to sleep only 4-5 hours, now i got used to sleep at least 8 and i'm doing much better in life :) that article is kinda true

I find that I have a really hard time sleeping right after smoking, it is easiest 3-4hours after smoking, in my experiences.

It's funny that you post this article, I have been getting between 2-6 hours of sleep a night for 16 months+. I smoke like a fish, and eat like hell. So far the doctors tell me I'm in good health though..... Have to stop all these bad habits before they have more long term effects. -.-
 
Thankfully I can say I get a good sleep pretty much every night, even if that begins at 12-1 o’clock and ends at 11 in the morning. Man I love sleep.
 
well the thing is that as longa as i don't smoke sativa, the joints pretty much work after an hour or so and then i really sleep a lot and feel refeshed.

I sleep a good 8 hours a day. Sometimes 7, sometimes 5 (if I smoked a lot during the weekend and want to sleep early on tuesdays :roll:), but most of the times 8 hours. Wake up every now and then, but fall asleep easily. If I don't sleep well for a couple of days I get really cranky, so I try to avoid that.

totally,.. me too.
I'm having problems sleeping less than 11 hours if I have the time (that might be quite a gift though, I'd rather sleep too much than too little). I hate getting up early, I'm having a hard time not to get cranky during the weeks :?
 
^one word: consistency. I wake up at roughly the same time everyday, this keeps you biorythm in check. Studies have shown that it is better to sleep a bit shorter and wake up at the same time than to wake up at different times after the full hours of sleep.

dito. Those are amazingly lucid and somehow visionary (I understand the meaning of it all while it unfolds). :heart: them.
