Designer drugs webstore shuts down

UPDATE 1 - As MPs vote through emergency legislation to crack down on designer drug shops in Poland, the web site which has dominated the market in what have been up until now “legal highs” has closed down.
‘Dopalacze.com’, one of the major sites in Poland which also had a number of retail stores located throughout the country, has announced that it is to stop trading.
“Due to the spectacular activity of [public functionaries] in Poland, Dopalacze.com announces the end of its business activity,” the site states, additionally thanking its clients.
The site also comments that “values such as economic freedom and liberty of trade have ceased to exist […] We hope that this serves as a warning that the Government of the Republic of Poland is able to do everything in order to increase public opinion, turning attention away from real problems.”
Emergency bill
The new law which bans the production and sales of so called psychoactive substances was passes with an overwhelming majority of 400 votes for with three against and three abstaining.
The emergency bill also includes tighter definitions on the drugs in respect to their effect, not the drugs’ ingredients.
The draft introduces a regulation allowing inspectors to close down premises where the drug is sold or produced providing the product does not fall under different regulations.
This is to ensure that inspectors do not ban sales of alcohol or tobacco products, which are controlled by different regulations.
The bill allows for the testing of a substance, with research not lasting more than 3 months. If the substance is found to be unsafe, the owner of the retail outlet in which it was sold will have to pay for the tests; if not, the fine may be reimbursed.
Fines for breaking the law on designer drug sales are to range from 20,000 to 1 million zloty (250,000 euro).
The war on smart drugs began after reports of hospitalized users and even fatalities believed to be linked to their use. (jb/ab)
