Can i grow mushrooms on just brown rice?
So if i fill a jar halffull with water and brown rice, let this cook form 90 minutes and then add my spores..
Will this work??

If not can i then just grind my brown rice and use that as brown rice flour?

Thx, cuz it's hard to find vermiculite here. :(

Yes , but you wont get as much sucess and it will take longer than with vermiculite , the vermiculite is there to help the myceleum get water and to help it penetrate the substrate . Rice on its own clumps to much and trying to grow on rice powder is even harder becausee that forms a solid lump . Try using cat litter instead of vermiculite , but you will probably need to use a little more water as the cat litter will probably soak it up . You need something that is PH neutral and chemical free . Try experimenting with different amounts of water and different types of cat litter . Round corn rice works better than long corn rice . You can get vermiculite in grow shops , big garden shops and builders markets . If you havent allready looked at the PF Tek site you could try that and you might find more information .

I read a lott about PF Tek.
I spent my saturday looking for vermiculite and it was nowhere to be found.
I'm gonna try a reptileshop tomorrow and else : :(

Vermiculite can be found at any gardening store. It is usually very easy to come by. Where about do you live in this world?

Belgium.
And as i said: i spent my entire saturday going to gardenstores to look for it. Most haven't even heard off it.

WTF that is really odd.... have you tried online venders. I'm sure one of them carry it. I thought it was vital to soil??

I found a company that makes it somewhere in the lower part off belgium, so i'm gonna give them a call tomorrowmorning.
But since they make it for soundisolation and such i doubt that i will get my hands on some.

I wish I could just send you some, how much do you need? Shipping costs are the only thing. Also it is very inexpensive here, something like 2 dollars.

I think i just have to drive to holland, since you can find it there.

I used to have difficulty getting it to , nobody new the name . And i wasnt joking when i said try using the stuff you can get from the supermarket for your cat toilet , its also vermiculite or another neutral , chemical free mineral . Have you looked at http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermiculit .

Lion a dit:

Not every gardeningshop has (heard of) it over here, so don't get your hopes up yet...

I'm also having problems to find vermiculite. Haven't find any store that sells it and since I don't drive, I spend most of my vermiculite-hunting time in buses, being driven in odd places around my city...

Well, about the kitty toilet stuff, I used to have some of it lying around in my house but as far as I remember, it was in pellets and it smelled weirdly, a bit like pine and button mushrooms (not joking). Thus even if I manage to get my hands on it, I'm not sure it'll be okay for my cubensis culture.

However, the vermiculite you get with cat herb growkits looks kinda good and I think it'd be an interesting solution if there's no vermiculite available around.

I found a buildingcentre that sells vermiculite(at least i hope it is) in bags of 110 L for 10 euro.
So I'll get me a bag later today.
Thx for the possible tip God.

If you need bags, tell me and I'll buy some more.
And we'll meet somewhere so you can take em hooooome.
