I'm going to be completely honest here:

I've never done or used any of the substances i'm sure many of you are familiar with. The only mind-altering substance i've used is some high grade marijuana, but smoking has never really been my thing, (especially when so many of the people that i know who do it are degenerates).

However, i will also say that i have always been fascinated with the mind and it's seemingly limitless capabilities. Not too long ago, i listened to several Terrence McKenna recordings about the psychadelic experience, various entheogens, etc. It was enthralling. To even conceive of such a level of insight and understanding was very overwhelming, and i was very interested from then on.
Personally, i've always been an experiential person. I never tried smoking 'weed' because my friends were doing it- I wanted to feel and understand what this demonized plant was all about. And like i said before, i've never done anything beyond that.
Surely if you're reading this, you are either A) nostalgic about your earlier days or B) chuckling at my naivity.

Either way, I am a sponge ready to absorb as much information, advice, stories, personal accounts, thoughts as possible!

Much Appreciated.

Welcome to the forum :)

Any questions, feel free to ask or look it up with a search (using the search link in blue not the box on the right), or browse the threads.

A healthy mix of the two  I've still got a lot of respect for terrence Mckenna's work, and Dennis McKenna has also done some great work too.

If you haven't already, go to erowid and hunt around - its a great resource for "this sort of thing".

all i have to say is good luck
all my experiences have been highly positive you seem responsible enough to do it right

enjoy :D

Welcome.

You will find everything you need to know here. If not, just ask.

So, is there any 'good' way to go about this as a new guy?
I've looked at Erowid a few times before now, done alot of reading and thinking... Frankly, the facilitation using substances might be a little tough... i'm in college and would like to stay here for a good bit longer, but i've always kinda hoped i would get the chance to try something in the future, in the proper setting of course..
None of my friends have any experience with any of this kind of stuff, and accordingly, i wouldnt trust them to find something for me.. It's quite a predicament- i have an earnest desire to explore my own mind and experience other states of conciousness, but my situation is somewhat not in favor of it.

are there particular substances / techniques you have an interest in? any you would avoid like the plague?

I personally went down the easily obtainable (legal) route, because of my own lack of connections when starting out - morning glory / Hawiian Baby Woodrose first, then Salvia, I was blown away by the first 2, but thought salvia was just plain weird, as apposed to awe-inspiring.

Plenty of people will tell you to steer clear of LSA, and there are good reasons why you might want to listen to that advice.

Shrooms might be one way to go, but you might need to wait till autumn and learn some mycology before that's a possibility.

It may also depend on where in the world you are.

if you don't have the right connections then grow your own psychedelic. try adopting some shrooms or cacti.

LostandFound, this will let your love grow for interesting experiences ;)

It may be worth noting that strong psychedelics impart a powerful emotional experience. You don't hear a lot about this aspect from many people, but it is THE most essentialpart of any psychedelic experience. Different psychedelics have different profiles, some of them are very abrasive, dosage depending.....

Be prepared to have your soul laid bare before yourself. This is intense and can be too much for some people....you will see yourself in an array of lights, not all of them favorable, either.....a strong psychedelic experience will teach you more about yourself than 20 years of normal life. IF you want to know, that is.

It's possible to reject the lessons, of course, and this makes for bad experiences with these compounds. You must have an open mind, and heart, to derive benefits.

My first psychedelic experiences were with LSD, when I was very young, ~17 or so, and they didn't do much for me, other than scare the hell out of me.

I had no guide, no knowledgable elder to clue me in, I was just thrown into the cyclone.....as time went on, I eventually did it again, and slowly, through painful trial and error, worked through a lot of issues.

It's not all glamour and kaliedoscopic hallucinations, believe me.....there's a lot of introspection and self-analysis going on.........

Eventually you'll get to where you can relax on it, and only then does the good part come.

The first trip is scary if strong enough and alone.

I'd suggest acid or extacy for a semi-good time... acid is a little riskier. Shrooms, if you do them, do an eighth your first time. You learn far, far too much.

Shrooms are definetly a good path to start down.

Why don't you grow some San Pedro cactus? You can cook it up into some nice slime and have a good day out of your head on it.

Many people don't like Salvia as much as I do, and I bet it is probably way too intense for a beginner, but definetly something to look into when you become more experienced.
